ABOUT SERENITY HOUSE IN ABILENE, TX

Serenity House, located in Abilene, Texas, offers residential, detoxification, and outpatient treatment to men and women struggling with addiction. Serenity House was founded in 1984 and has treated over 30,000 people since its inception. The organization operates two other locations in Texas: a 32-bed residential treatment facility in Fredericksburg, and an outpatient treatment facility in Wichita Falls.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To be admitted, clients begin by calling Serenity House for a free addiction screening. Most clients remain in detoxification treatment for three to 12 days, and then proceed to a 30, 60, or 90-day residential treatment program. The facility is able to treat co-occurring disorders as well as mental health conditions and cross-addiction.

The facility’s treatment program follows the 12-Step method of recovery. Throughout treatment, clients receive individual and group counseling as well as educational lectures. Specialized treatment groups are available that address women’s issues and chronic relapse. Participants in need of detoxification may receive medication including buprenorphine under 24-hour nursing supervision. Families are able to participate in the treatment program through weekly lectures and family counseling.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Serenity House includes master’s-level counselors, physicians, registered nurses, and chemical dependency counselors. The facility also employs “Peer Recovery Coaches” who are in recovery themselves.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Photos on the facility website show shared bedrooms with twin beds. Each bedroom has two sinks, and there is a shared toilet and shower located between each set of bedrooms. The facility also has a reflection pool and garden, a chapel, fitness and recreation areas, and an on-site dining facility. Having just left Serenity after 34 days, wanted to make a few observations on the other comments posted. If you are using insurance or are paying for your treatment, the women\'s housing is a block away. The staff watches you all the way when you are walking. This house, \" the Lodge\" has a few more amenities and space than the campus dormitory. The majority of the clients here are state funded and stay in the main dorm. Also, this program is based almost exclusively on the 12 step methodology and is DEFINITELY faith based. This was my fifth attempt at sobriety and I would recommend this facility to anyone! I am not a Christian; however, I truly learned more here than I have in the last 35 years of my life. Don\'t discount Serenity because of its faith based approach. They have plenty to offer to all who have the desire for a better life.

Attitudes and qualifications of the staff. This facility is one that a friend of mine was in. Thankfully, I have been spared addiction issues; unfortunately, he hasn't. After having been in this facility, he has stayed sober longer than having attended other facilities.

Welcoming to my friend. Did not encourage her to stay when she wanted to check herself out. My friend who was admitted had only positive things to say about her short time there, but left very quickly.

Excellent staff and counselors. Positive comfortable environment. Medically assisted detox. Real recovery possible. However, there is a lack of funding. If you love in Texas and need treatment but are scared to go; just apply, it's a great place and they will genuinely take care of you and help you grow. I found myself here.

It was a great facility. It was not faith based, nor did it deal with co occurring disorders.

The counseling was fantastic. However, they needed more one-on-one and family oriented counseling.

Serenity House really seems to care about their clients. They focus on the disease aspect of addiction, teaching those who are striving for life-long recovery how to deal with the physical and mental cravings as well as how to maintain a healthy spiritual, mental, and physical outlook. If you're looking for a fancy, frilly place, Serenity House if probably not for you. However, if you are looking for tools to provide you or a loved one the education and skills needed to cope in a stressful world without the drugs that once helped you through it, Serenity House is a great place to start. The counselors there were top-notch. They had a great deal of experience with the disease aspect of addiction. The facility is dated, but it is quaint and serves its purpose well. I wish there had been more emphasis on the holistic aspect of recovery. Using yoga, herbs, relaxation techniques, etc... is a very important aspect of after care. There was no emphasis on this except meditation to a very slight extent. I wish they would update the facilities, the women had to walk to their house from the main house, a block. This was due to growth of Serenity House, so I suppose its a good thing in a way.

Once again, Serentiy House saved my life. I used the tools I received in treatment and a sponsor. Changed my life.

I learned that to keep coming back, it means to meetings, not rehab. It all comes down to the person and willingness.
