ABOUT SETON - SHOAL CREEK HOSPITAL

Part of the Seton Healthcare System, Shoal Creek Hospital in Austin, Texas, provides short-term residential treatment for adults and adolescents seeking treatment for acute psychiatric conditions and chemical dependency. Residential detox services are available for adults, as well as an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adolescents and young adults. Seton is one of Texas’ 187 (43.4 percent) private, non-profit treatment organizations, and is a large, faith-based hospital system founded in 1902 by the Daughters of Charity.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at Seton begins with an assessment to determine the right level of care. Seton is one of Texas’ 35 (8.1 percent) treatment programs in a hospital setting. The average residential stay for an adult is three to seven days. Treatment addresses mental health and substance use disorders through dual diagnosis tracks. The emphasis is on stabilization in preparation for a transition to continued outpatient or longer-term residential care.

While in either detox or other crisis treatment, each client receives a medical evaluation and participates in treatment and discharge planning, group therapy, and individual therapy as necessary. Substance abuse treatment incorporates 12-step concepts, relapse prevention planning, health education, and coping skills development. A typical treatment schedule also integrates creative art and music therapy, as well as family group therapy on weekends.

The facility is one of 115 (26.7 percent) facilities in the state that offer treatment programs to adolescents. Treatment for children and adolescents aged six to 17 involves the same basic elements as those for adults, while also integrating parenting support.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Each treatment team includes a psychiatrist, nurse, and licensed social worker. Shoal Creek employs more than a dozen psychiatrists, including just under half who specialize in child and adolescent psychiatry.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility is clinical in nature and has quick access to medical resources and personnel. Because of the nature of the treated conditions, the facility has heightened security included lock doors. There are scheduled outdoor times and access to a gym or other physical activity. Meals are provided by the psychiatric unit, and smoking is not allowed. A sample daily schedule includes various group activities such as movie-watching and time available to meet with a hospital chaplain. Visitation hours are scheduled twice per day.

FINANCING

Shoal Creek accepts dozens of commercial insurance plans and is one of the 246 (57.1 percent) of facilities in Texas that accept Medicaid. It also accepts Medicare and TRICARE. Financial assistance is available to some clients who qualify through the main Seton hospital system, and staff members will assist in arranging payment plans.

Good staff and mental health care professionals. Outdated facility, needed a remodel. Family members were often ignored by staff. We were satisfied with the facility's treatment and discharge of my family member.

The staff is knowledgeable which is a strength. The cost was a weakness and many health insurance companies will not cover expenses. The facility did not have good communication with insurance company

They are wonderful people. They told me not to quit drinking until I got to their facility. I showed up drunk and they took great care of me and I had no regrets.
