ABOUT SHADOW MOUNTAIN HOSPITAL AND ASSESSMENT CENTER

Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System operates four locations in Tulsa and Kansas, Okla. It is one of Oklahoma’s 4 (2.1 percent) hospital-based treatment facilities. The hospital is 10 miles southeast of downtown Tulsa and serves children and adolescents between ages four and 17, as well as adults. Services include acute residential care and crisis intervention services, with the primary function of stabling clients so they may safely return home. Detox is not available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with a free assessment. Clients also help develop a plan for re-entry to their families and communities. Shadow Mountain is one of the 56 (29.3 percent) of facilities in Oklahoma that offer treatment options to adolescents.

While in treatment, clients undergo a series of intervention methods. These include counseling and medical treatments as needed. Therapeutic methods, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are used. Additionally, clients engage in individual and group therapy as well as family counseling and discharge planning.

Care is gender-specific and targets co-occurring mental health disorders and developmental disability disorders. These disorders include Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), reactive attachment disorder, and sexually maladaptive behaviors. Shadow Mountain is one of the 110 (57.6 percent) of facilities that offer treatment specifically for women and one of 107 (56 percent) of facilities that offer treatment specifically for men. Therapeutic foster care and swift adoption services are also available.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System employs more than 400 staff members, including physicians and psychiatrists. It is also one of the 27 (14.1 percent) of facilities in the state that are accredited by the Joint Commission.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility has a bright, modern building with shared bedrooms and en suite bathrooms. In total, the hospital has 108 beds and 27 acres, which include a playground, football field, courtyards, and a dining room. The facility is clinical in nature, and clients have access to staff members at all times.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from alumni of this facility, but at the time of this writing, Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System has an average rating of 1.9 out of five stars on Google.[1] Most commentary was very negative with many reviewers noting that the facility deserved "zero stars." Poor communication, unqualified staff, and unkempt conditions were the most common complaints. Joseph gave one star and wrote representatively: "Gross rooms, nasty bathrooms, terrible staff, wrong kids to be around if you're looking for help." Additionally, an anonymous reviewer added, "I got no help, was ignored by the doctors, staff, and shrinks alike."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com also provided mediocre feedback about their experience with Shadow Mountain Hospital. One gave high ratings across the board, writing: “They actually listen to the people.” Although they admitted: “Some times I wondered if the issue they were looking at was a issue.”

The other reviewer was slightly less positive, giving two or three out of five stars in most categories and indicating that they would not recommend treatment. They admitted: “It helped my sister recover,” but also that “they didn't work with families well.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

The two staff members polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave mostly positive reviews about their experience with Shadow Mountain; both awarded four or five out of five stars in most categories such as family participation, affordability, staff experience, and counseling options. One reviewer, for example, commented: “Kindness was a strength but not enough group therapy. Good place to be.”

At the time of this writing, Glassdoor reviewers provided more negative feedback with 1.9 out of five stars based on 31 ratings.[2] Several noted "understaffing" with one reviewer writing, "Dangerous staff to patient ratios" and "No regard for staff and patient safety." Another noted that "Units are scary and unsafe," while yet another anonymous staffer added, "Patients are often bullied by staff and treated in a less than dignified way. Staff who beg to differ and treat patients with dignity are met with criticism and ostracized from the majority."

FINANCING

Shadow Mountain accepts most private insurances and self-payment. It is also one of the 137 (71.7 percent) of facilities in Oklahoma that accept Medicaid. It also has a relationship with American Healthcare Lending, for those needing to access loans.

CONCLUSION

Investigations into Shadow Mountain
have been launched in recent years. An eight-month BuzzFeed News investigation found possible abuses of patients including reports on riots, understaffing, and allegations of billing fraud.

Following investigations, SoonerCare and Medicare agreements ended with the hospital. These investigations are ongoing.

They actually listen to the poeple. Some times I wondered if the issue they were looking at was a issue. My uncle used this to become sober and it did help
