ShareHouse, headquartered in Fargo, N.D., has treated adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders for more than 40 years. The rehabilitation center provides a continuum of treatment services, including standard outpatient treatment (OP), intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), residential treatment, and continuing care. The facility also offers educational seminars for DUI offenders.

To be eligible for admission, individuals must be at least 18 years of age and have no history of violence, sexual assault, or sex addiction. As part of the intake process, clients undergo a bio-psycho-social evaluation to determine the most appropriate level of care for their needs. The facility offers three levels of residential treatment: high intensity (a minimum of 30 hours of programming per week), medium intensity (15 to 29 hours of programming per week), and low intensity (5 to 14 hours of programming per week).

In order to create an individualized experience, clients work with the treatment team to select appropriate therapy groups from ShareHouse’s “Treatment Mall.” Available groups within the Treatment Mall cover a variety of topics, including trauma, the 12-Steps, anger management, gender-specific issues, and parenting. While most counseling occurs in a group setting, clients are granted one-on-one sessions with on-site clinicians as needed.

Outpatient programming is designed to serve as a step-down from residential care. Clients learn relapse prevention skills and develop a comprehensive plan for long-term sobriety. Those enrolled in IOP meet three times a week, while clients at the standard level of outpatient care meet twice a week. Those at the continuing care level meet once a week.

ShareHouse’s treatment team includes registered nurses, master’s-level counselors, licensed and certified addiction counselors, licensed social workers, and a clinical psychologist.

According to ShareHouse’s website, residents stay in gender-specific, fully furnished apartments, sharing accommodations with up to four other individuals. Each unit contains a kitchen and living room, and staff are available 24 hours a day. Clients are provided with three meals a day, all of which are served in the center’s communal dining hall. Smoking is permitted in designated areas, but cell phones and computers are prohibited.

The three alumni polled by at the time of this writing provided mixed reviews of ShareHouse’s treatment. Two respondents submitted above-average ratings for the program’s treatment effectiveness, but tempered their praise for the staff and facility with minor criticism. “A good facility but holistic offerings and family participation needs to be improved,” one alum wrote. Another respondent felt that the center’s “strictness on participation” was a weakness. A third alum described the treatment as “ineffective” and complained about the program’s affordability and lack of holistic options.

On, the two individuals who submitted reviews of ShareHouse both provided ratings of one out of five stars.[1] “I came out using more, than when I went. It's difficult to better yourself in such a toxic environment, full of a racist staff,” Bruce, one of the reviewers, wrote. The facility fared better on Facebook, where it received an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars, based on reviews from 21 users.[2] (Note that the facility’s page manager has the option to vet all user reviews.)

L.F., the one reviewer who identified herself as the loved one of a client, provided the facility with a mixed review. While L.F. gave the center’s treatment effectiveness four out of five stars, she indicated that her husband did not benefit from his time at ShareHouse. “My husband was ‘forced’ to go to treatment by the court. Until someone wants to quit drinking, even the best of the best isn't going to work,” she wrote.

ShareHouse’s outpatient treatment fees range from $100 for a one-hour individual session to $550 for a four-hour group session. Depending on the level of care, the price for one day of residential treatment ranges from $450 to $900. The center accepts both public and private insurance.
