ABOUT SOUTH TEXAS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER
For more than two decades, South Texas Behavioral Health Center has provided treatment to individuals suffering with chemical dependency and other mental and behavioral health disorders. Located in Edinburg, Texas, the private, inpatient facility provides specialized programs for different age groups: children (aged 3-12), adolescents (aged 13-17), adults (18-55), and geriatric (55+).
The center also offers intensive outpatient program (IOP), a program type offered at 53.8 percent of rehabs in Texas. Detox is available on site. Though substance misuse treatment is part of the teen and adult programs, detox is only available in the adult program. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 9.5 percent of rehabs in Texas offer detox in a residential setting.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment is individualized and multidisciplinary, designed to treat both crisis and ongoing health concerns. Distinct, age-based programs focus on behavioral health challenges that are particularly prominent in successive stages of life. Education, coping skills, and planning for aftercare and recovery maintenance are prioritized in each program.
Comprehensive medical care is available for adult and teenage patients who have received a dual diagnosis of depression and chemical dependency. Patients suffering with symptoms such as self-mutilation tendencies and severe mood swings participate in an array of therapies including recreation, psychiatric counseling, medication management, and anger management.
The IOP for adults meets Monday through Friday mornings and focuses mainly on depression and anxiety.
Each patient receives treatment from a team that includes psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, therapists, and other behavioral health professionals. Staff credentials represented on the facility’s website include board certification in clinical psychopharmacology, diplomat status with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Psychiatric Association membership, and medical training in New York, Galveston, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and at Children’s Hospital in Boston.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Photographs on the center's website depict meeting and therapy areas with bright spaces with large windows, outdoor play areas, shared bedrooms, and an indoor gym with a basketball court.
The facility has 134 beds, more than three times the average number of designated beds (44) at residential rehabs in Texas. Transportation assistance is available.
