ABOUT SPRINGBROOK BEHAVIORAL HEALTH IN TRAVELERS REST, SC

Springbrook Behavioral Health, located in Travelers Rest, S.C., offers inpatient treatment to children and adolescents struggling with autism and behavioral health problems linked to autism. The facility has been in existence for more than three decades and operates with a mission to help children with autism become more flexible, spontaneous, and adaptable.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s treatment program focuses on Applied Behavior Analysis, which is a discipline that uses evidence-based interventions to improve socially significant behaviors. Treatment at Springbrook also incorporates Occupational Therapy. To be admitted, an application (available on the facility’s website) must be emailed, faxed, or mailed to Springbook. Applications will be reviewed by medical staff for admission within 24 hours of receipt.

Throughout treatment, clients receive visual schedules, play therapy, peer training, modeled behaviors, joining techniques, and story-based interventions that ask students to imagine themselves in social situations and plan ahead to decrease anxiety. Families are included in the treatment program through visits, phone calls, and family counseling. The facility offers unique treatments including a therapy dog.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Springbrook includes three medical doctors, two board-certified behavioral analysts (BCBAs), a registered nurse, an occupational therapist, and two licensed master social workers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Springbrook Behavioral Health facility is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The treatment facility is equipped with several classrooms, a sensory room equipped with cooler lighting, white noise machines, aromatherapy centers, a padded tantrum area, a gym, and indoor pool, a pond, and acres of land for exploring under the supervision of an occupational therapist.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing there has been one alum polled by Rehabs.com. The reviewer gave Springbrook Behavioral Health very poor ratings and said she would not recommend it to others. She strongly disagreed that there are many counseling options to choose from, strongly disagreed that the facility is adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems, and strongly disagreed that facility staff are experienced and well-trained. When asked about strengths of Springbrook Behavioral Health, she wrote, “none.” When asked about weaknesses, she said “Everything, made me feel more crazy.” She added additional commentary, saying, “People could pay workers to use their cell phones, night guards slept on their job.”

On the facility’s Google page, there was an overall rating of 2.2 out of five stars based on 37 total reviews.[1] Most reviews are extremely negative, with several parents commenting that their children were not well-cared for in the facility. Parent of a client P.M., who gave three stars, wrote, “Some things that were promised, were never done during a 20 month stay. Very disappointing to not see your child progress and not get the help they need. The artificial setting inside Springbrook does prepare students for success in the real world... Be careful!” N.N., an alum, agreed with that viewpoint. He gave one star and wrote, “Terrible and unhealthy food, no gym or exercise equipment, rude and unprofessional staff. There are two or three good ones there out of the entire staff.”

WHAT FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing there has been one family member of a client polled by Rehabs.com. The aunt of a client gave Springbrook Behavioral Health excellent ratings and said she would recommend it to others. The loved one gave the facility five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, five stars for accommodations and amenities, and five stars for meals and nutrition.

The family member was not involved in helping the client pay for treatment, but did visit the client during treatment, and stayed in regular contact with the client. She said she believed the facility appeared to match up with how it was described on the website or other marketing materials. The loved one added that she thought her niece benefitted from the care she received at the facility. She added additional commentary, saying, “The staff is patient and kind. They are really concerned with the treatments and want all of their clients to succeed.”

I was in Springbrook for one week and the doctors and nurses are a joke. The food was actually halfway decent but I did see a roache. The social worker that I had was horrible. She should not be allowed to work with people who really have problems. She did nothing for me and talked to me like I was a piece of crud and was VERY RUDE. Honestly she should never be allowed to work with people who are wanting and needed help. Although there was an older lady that was very good at her job as a social worker. I observed her working with her patients and was caring and went out of her way to do whatever was asked of her. If you love someone do not send them to Springbrook. If you want them to get help send them somewhere else.

My friend is in there now, she begged me for help because she felt that she is a threat to herself, her two children and her mother. She has been in and out of institutions most of her adult life. I think she likes the vacation she gets. She has told me she still feels like a threat and needs long term care where she can be in a controlled environment. She has never had to answer to anyone besides her mother and now she has others to answer to. She is lying to her therapist and I have tried to communicate that to the therapist. She choses to believe my friend and I think the reason is that she has Medicare and Medicaid and its time to send her out. People, mental healthcare is not for the poor. It is for those who have insurance or plenty of money. I think she needs to be transferred to another facility that has more experienced people that can see through manipulation. They want to send her home!!! I talk to my friend on the phone and her story remains consistent with me and has not changed. But the Springbrook staff choses not to believe anyone other than the one that needs mental stability. Should they release her to home instead of to a more intense treatment facility I will forever hold these people responsible for anything that may happen to her family. I feel helpless now and I thought I was helping her when she reached out to me. Her kind of behavior does not change in a short period of time. The staff decides her readiness based on her insurance payor.

The staff that stayed by ourside was awesome. But the doctors are ridiculous. They literally yelled at me because I couldn\'t sleep for 3 days. I was coming down heavy drugs and they told me I better get over it because they weren\'t here to babysit. But my counselor came in and talked to me and prayed for me. I wish I could remember his name....awesome man. When we would go for outside time while people smoked, we\'d have to walk through the psychiatric wing....and of course some people were not right....but they were allowing other patients to taunt them. Not right in my book. I give the counsellors that I had 5 stars, but some people there should not be allowed a job.

I was employed for a short time . I have never met so many low class women claiming to be professionals. The nurses are not experienced in mental or medical care of patients. They are vulgar to and in the presence of patients. They are rude and angry at the world. The nurse manager is a clueless joke, everyone makes fun of her and have no respect for her. The aides run Springbrook because they are aware that the nurses are lazy; unprofessional. Sinks and toilets leak, the ceiling leaks, mold and mildew is everywhere. The \"pool\" is a hole of filthy moisture, adult patients are not allowed to swim. The \"courtyard\" is an area scattered with cigarette butts, smoking is the only activity for adults. A gazebo was mentioned in a review, this must be the shabby overhang where patients smoke, someone must not be familiar with actual gazebos. Staff pretends they do patient checks every 15 minutes. In conclusion, patients only come to Springbrook because they are allowed to smoke. They do not recover and some are even worse off when they leave. If you are a professional who cares about patients and teamwork PLEASE SEEK EMPLOYMENT ELSEWHERE. If you are a family member who cares about your loved one PLEASE NEVER ALLOW THEM TO BE ADMITTED TO SPRINGBROOK. I hope this review will help potential employees not make the mistake I made by accepting a position. Perhaps patients and family members will make a better choice with Marshall Pickens; Carolina Behavorial; Patrick B Harris or The Phoenix Center.

This place is a dump. They are not experienced in mental health. Two of the nurses looked like they needed to take a bath and were rude. One of the nurses also smelled bad. There was a pretty blonde nurse but I never got to talk to her because she was on the other side .patients said they really liked her and she knew a lot that really helped them understand. I liked the doctors and the kitchen people. I am fine now and back to work after a week at Carolina Behavorial. NEVER GO TO SPRINGBROOK. NEVER LET A FAMILY MEMBER GO.

The staff is patient and kind. They are really concerned with the treatments and want all of their clients to succeed. They did a great job in helping my niece. Offered group counseling, and passes to leave the center for several hours
