ABOUT STANLEY STREET TREATMENT AND RESOURCES (SSTAR)

Founded in 1977 and located along the eastern shore of Mount Hope Bay in Fall River, Mass., Stanley Street Treatment and Resources (SSTAR) is a non-profit healthcare and social service agency that provides a wide variety of mental health and substance abuse treatment services to the communities of Southeastern Massachusetts. The facility treats men, women, and adolescents who require help working through their mental health and/or substance abuse issues. SSTAR also offers detox treatment as part of inpatient services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

SSTAR offers several different types of services and programs including family intervention, primary healthcare, and both outpatient and inpatient treatment. According to the facility’s website, it has an open access center for people who need immediate help and going to the center doesn’t require an appointment.

The primary healthcare center provides primary healthcare, preventative medicine, education, and supportive services for all individuals. The center also has specialized services including the treatment of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.

Inpatient services offer three separate programs: clinical support, dual diagnosis, and acute treatment. The clinical support services have a 30-bed, gender-specific unit open 24/7 for clients. The dual diagnosis services (DDS) provides short-term care and psychiatric support for clients who have co-occurring disorders. Lastly, acute treatment services are a 20-bed unit primarily for detoxification. Treatment modalities used include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), psychiatric evaluations, individual and group therapy, relapse prevention, and aftercare/discharge planning, among more.

Outpatient services provide a wide variety of substance abuse and mental health programs. They include ambulatory behavioral health services, a batterer’s intervention program, a driver alcohol education program, family interventions, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for addiction treatment, outpatient support groups, smoking cessation services, and a women’s center. Treatment modalities include group, individual and family therapy, case management, medication services and links to 12 Step programs

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health Retardation license all services and programs offered at SSTAR. The staff members are a mixture of licensed professionals including nurses, master’s level clinicians, physicians, and directors.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

No information about SSTAR’s accommodations is available on its website. A picture on its Google page depicts a plain-looking facility in the middle of town. 20 reviewers polled by Rehabs.com rated the facility’s cleanliness an average 3.75 out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Reviews collected by Rehabs.com are mixed. Ten alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date rated the facility’s family participation an average 3.7 out of five stars, but its holistic treatment offerings only 1.9 stars. Eleven alumni rated the facility’s affordability 4.2 stars and its counseling options and staff’s level of experience and training 3.6 stars.

In general, clients praised the staff as helpful but that nutrition was adequate at best. One anonymous alum summed up their feelings by saying: “This facility caters mainly homeless individuals on a free state health plan.” They went on to say that they “would prefer treatment in a hospital.” Another anonymous alum wrote: “good one on one counciling food was adicuate.” Contrasting those complaints, alum J.E. wrote: “The staff was excellent and easy to talk to. Offered excellent unbiased advice. Very goal oriented counseling.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Reviews from loved ones were similarly more positive. Eight loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date rated SSTAR an average 3.6 out of five stars for its connectivity and visitor policy and 2.9 stars for its holistic treatment offerings. Nine loved ones rated the facility’s affordability 4.2 stars, its cleanliness and staff’s level of experience and training four stars, and its family participation 3.9 stars.

Loved one M.S. told Rehabs.com that though there was successful outpatient counseling, the facility put too much emphasis on medication and had poor accommodations. But several anonymous family members felt strongly that the staff was extremely caring. One loved one told Rehabs.com: “they identify very well with the clients, full understanding of what client is going through, offer many different services, put their all into every patient.” Another anonymous loved one wrote that the “well trained staff” had “compassion.”

FINANCING

SSTAR accepts private insurance. The facility’s website indicates that it does its best to accept people regardless of their ability to pay. Citehealth and Healthgrove both report that the facility accepts Medicaid and state insurance as well.

Was there and they were not very well staffed and there classes on alcoholic behavior was not what I suspected they seem to rush through the classes they also crammed as much information into you in one day very hard to comprehend what they were trying to get across so they need improvement on that. Good one to one counciling. Poor supervision needs more qualified staff.

They counselors and staff have dealt with their own issues and always lend an ear when ever you need to talk. Need to be able to get out more. I have been clean for 4 years so I don't know how much they have changed. But the last time I was there they made be believe in myself!

One of the staff were very rude. My friend left me a phone number to call back after leaving me a message. It was very important message regarding her family member.

They have successful outpatient counseling. However, they treat as a whole, not one on one. They have horrible accommodations. ... It should be shut down in my opinion.

The food was okay. The staff has no clue and they have nothing to ever do. It was dirty and there were no leisure activities allowed. It was one of the worse places to be.

I unfortunately relapsed after two weeks. However, the facility had wonderful staff support, was respectful and I enjoyed my stay. However, they need more holistic offerings and individual counseling.

This facility caters mainly homeless individuals on a free state health plan. I would prefer treatment in a hospital. The facility has solid programs but untrained staff.
