ABOUT START: ST. ANTHONY RECOVERY AND TREATMENT
START is a substance misuse treatment program operated by St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. One of nine hospital-based rehab programs in the state (4.7 percent of all facilities), START offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services, including medically supervised detox, partial hospitalization (PHP), and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).
St. Anthony Hospital is operated by SSM Health, a Catholic, nonprofit health system with over 11,000 providers across the Midwest. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 50.8 percent of rehab facilities in Oklahoma are nonprofits.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
All clients undergo a free one-hour assessment with a licensed mental health professional prior to establish an individualized treatment plan. Length of stay varies based on each client's needs.
While the program is rooted in 12-Step, clients also take part in group therapy sessions, educational lectures on addiction, and spiritual care groups. The facility opens its doors each Saturday for family lectures and sessions. START also offers treatment for dual diagnoses, though the program’s website notes that if a co-occurring condition requires medical attention, clients may first be referred to a medical unit prior to beginning treatment at START.
Aftercare services are based on each client's need and include weekly alumni group at no additional cost.
Per SSM’s website, START treatment staff include physicians, nurses, psychiatric professionals, addiction counselors, dietitians, recreational therapists, occupational therapists, and chaplains. To date, the five individuals polled on the matter gave generally positive opinions of the facility's staff.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Reviews submitted to Rehabs.com by six alumni to date were mostly positive. The former clients generally gave four- and five-star ratings to most categories evaluated, including staff support, the staff’s level of training and experience, and the overall effectiveness of treatment. “A very positive atmosphere during my stay,” J.M.W. wrote in a representative review. “Lots of interaction with counselors and other residents.”
Despite these positive reports, others felt the facility could do more. Several alumni gave lower ratings of between one and three stars for holistic offerings and counseling options. “More holistic programs would have been good,” an anonymous alum wrote. Others commented on how the program needed more family involvement.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Reports from the two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com to date were more mixed. While both reviewers gave higher ratings to the facility's cleanliness and connectivity, they gave lower ratings to family participation, holistic offerings, and counseling options.
One anonymous reviewer wrote that their “Family wasn't involved all that much.” The other considered the facility “very organized” when it came to medicines and meals, but echoed some alumni complaints on the lack of variety in programming. “Not many programs to choose from, or activity,” the other loved one commented, also anonymously.
According to SSM's website, START accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, as well as self-payment. A 2017 SAMHSA survey indicates that 25.7 percent of rehabs in Oklahoma accept Medicare while 71.7 percent accept Medicaid. The website further notes that payment must be received before being allowed to begin treatment. Counselors will contact new clients’ insurance companies on their behalf. To date, the five individuals polled by Rehabs.com regarding cost gave mixed opinions.
