Steps to Recovery Philosophy
We begin fighting the disease by attempting to remove the stigma surrounding addiction. We fight for our clients needs, we understand and relate to the misery of addiction. We believe that recovery is sustained through community and connection. Our approach and company culture is to engage our clients in ways that offer intimacy, authenticity and transparency. We believe that these elements will allow our clients to grow in ways that will sustain recovery. We take that philosophy into everything we do and have seen it become the major difference between us and other providers. We believe in saying what we do and doing what we say.
Areas of Specialization
Our Admissions Department is One of a Kind
Our availability and commitment to clients and families prior to admission is unmatched and often the difference between someone continuing to use and getting help. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will work with anyone who needs us. This means that even if you don’t have insurance or your loved one is not ready for treatment at that exact time, we will still be a resource and support to you. We are known to go above and beyond and engage the potential client and their family as if they were already in treatment.
Recover in a Comfortable, Intimate Setting
We believe in supporting people in a way that will represent the living situation they will eventually integrate back to. This means that we don’t have personal chefs, steam rooms, Jacuzzi baths, or movie theatres. Our living accommodations are modern, comfortable, and visually appealing. Our settings are designed to meet every need of our clients while creating an atmosphere of motivation and positive self-esteem. We implement routines and rules that mirror the types of patterns that sustain meaningful life skills and productive behaviors.

ABOUT STEPS TO RECOVERY
A small, extended care facility in Levittown, Pa., Steps to Recovery (StR) operates three levels of outpatient treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. The program prioritizes community involvement in the recovery process, providing a comfortable, luxurious setting in which to begin applying concepts and practices of sober living. StR has been recognized as a “leader in the LGBT healthcare equality” by the Human Rights Commission. The Pennsylvania facility was established in 2013 and partners with 1st Step Behavioral Health, a residential rehabilitation center in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area, where detoxification services are available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Two phases of treatment are the core of StR’s service: partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programming (IOP). Both include housing support. The 30- to 45-day first stage, PHP, involves five hours of therapy per day, six days a week, with two individual sessions per week. While staying in the facility’s structured housing, clients also begin integrating into the local community.
Clients are then encouraged to attend a second phase IOP, which increases community involvement through support for employment and transition to less structured sober housing. Clients participate in nine hours of group and one individual session per week, for six to eight weeks. Additional outpatient treatment is available at decreasing levels of intensity as clients live independently in the local community.
Groups at StR have a maximum of 10 participants and address topics such as family dynamics, co-occurring mental health disorders, trauma, and relapse prevention. Several modalities are utilized in individual and group sessions, including cognitive behavioral therapy, Associative Awareness Treatment (AAT), and drama and music therapy. During the second phase of treatment, clients begin to integrate into local 12-step programs. Medication management and aftercare planning are also provided.
The facility’s website emphasizes its thorough and supportive admissions process, which includes facilitation of conversation with a client’s family in the beginning stages of treatment planning. Loved ones are encouraged to participate in the recovery process and are offered several options to do so, from multi-family group therapy to individual family sessions.
According to information provided by the facility, StR has a staff-to-client ratio of 2:1. A psychiatric nurse practitioner and team of master’s level clinicians, including licensed social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists, comprise the treatment team. The founder and president of StR is in recovery himself.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Supportive housing for Phase I and II has 30 beds and private as well as shared rooms. The residences feature comfortable lounge and meeting spaces, modern kitchens, luxury bathrooms, and beautiful grounds. One has a swimming pool and one borders woods.
