Steps to Recovery Philosophy

We begin fighting the disease by attempting to remove the stigma surrounding addiction. We fight for our clients needs, we understand and relate to the misery of addiction. We believe that recovery is sustained through community and connection. Our approach and company culture is to engage our clients in ways that offer intimacy, authenticity and transparency. We believe that these elements will allow our clients to grow in ways that will sustain recovery. We take that philosophy into everything we do and have seen it become the major difference between us and other providers. We believe in saying what we do and doing what we say.

Areas of Specialization

  • Our Admissions Department is One of a Kind
Our availability and commitment to clients and families prior to admission is unmatched and often the difference between someone continuing to use and getting help. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will work with anyone who needs us. This means that even if you don’t have insurance or your loved one is not ready for treatment at that exact time, we will still be a resource and support to you. We are known to go above and beyond and engage the potential client and their family as if they were already in treatment.

  • Recover in a Comfortable, Intimate Setting
We believe in supporting people in a way that will represent the living situation they will eventually integrate back to. This means that we don’t have personal chefs, steam rooms, Jacuzzi baths, or movie theatres. Our living accommodations are modern, comfortable, and visually appealing. Our settings are designed to meet every need of our clients while creating an atmosphere of motivation and positive self-esteem. We implement routines and rules that mirror the types of patterns that sustain meaningful life skills and productive behaviors.

ABOUT STEPS TO RECOVERY

A small, extended care facility in Levittown, Pa., Steps to Recovery (StR) operates three levels of outpatient treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. The program prioritizes community involvement in the recovery process, providing a comfortable, luxurious setting in which to begin applying concepts and practices of sober living. StR has been recognized as a “leader in the LGBT healthcare equality” by the Human Rights Commission. The Pennsylvania facility was established in 2013 and partners with 1st Step Behavioral Health, a residential rehabilitation center in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area, where detoxification services are available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Two phases of treatment are the core of StR’s service: partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programming (IOP). Both include housing support. The 30- to 45-day first stage, PHP, involves five hours of therapy per day, six days a week, with two individual sessions per week. While staying in the facility’s structured housing, clients also begin integrating into the local community.

Clients are then encouraged to attend a second phase IOP, which increases community involvement through support for employment and transition to less structured sober housing. Clients participate in nine hours of group and one individual session per week, for six to eight weeks. Additional outpatient treatment is available at decreasing levels of intensity as clients live independently in the local community.

Groups at StR have a maximum of 10 participants and address topics such as family dynamics, co-occurring mental health disorders, trauma, and relapse prevention. Several modalities are utilized in individual and group sessions, including cognitive behavioral therapy, Associative Awareness Treatment (AAT), and drama and music therapy. During the second phase of treatment, clients begin to integrate into local 12-step programs. Medication management and aftercare planning are also provided.

The facility’s website emphasizes its thorough and supportive admissions process, which includes facilitation of conversation with a client’s family in the beginning stages of treatment planning. Loved ones are encouraged to participate in the recovery process and are offered several options to do so, from multi-family group therapy to individual family sessions.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to information provided by the facility, StR has a staff-to-client ratio of 2:1. A psychiatric nurse practitioner and team of master’s level clinicians, including licensed social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists, comprise the treatment team. The founder and president of StR is in recovery himself.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Supportive housing for Phase I and II has 30 beds and private as well as shared rooms. The residences feature comfortable lounge and meeting spaces, modern kitchens, luxury bathrooms, and beautiful grounds. One has a swimming pool and one borders woods. Residents have access to a gym and exercise classes, personalized meals, and transportation.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com had received one survey response and 22 written reviews from former clients, of which the vast majority were very favorable. Nearly all referred to the staff as exceptionally caring. Other positive trends included comments on the comfortable living spaces and the life-saving effect of treatment.

Four alumni mentioned success at StR after previous attempts at rehab and five specifically noted their continued sobriety. Two referenced the common age of clients in their early 20s, one positively and one critically. The latter wrote that the facility was not a good fit for someone in his 40s and he left before completing one day. The two overall negative reviews represented the living arrangements as less comfortable than had been promoted.

Third party review sites also had overwhelmingly positive alumni feedback. Five Google reviews averaged a rating of 4.8 out of five,[1] and YellowPages.com and Yelp together had four reviews, all perfect five-star ratings.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Three loved ones provided feedback to Rehabs.com. Two were very positive, and one reported concerns with his spouse’s abrupt discharge.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, StR will work with most insurance companies out of network while also offering lower rates and referrals to resources for self-pay clients.

Steps to Recovery is by far the best treatment center I’ve been to. At this place you are given respect from the moment you walk through that door. I’ve never met nicer staff at any other facility. This place truly cares and will help you every step of the way. Even after discharge your still in the StR family and that’s exactly how your treated here just like family. I would recommend anyone looking for a place to go and seek help to try StR. I’m so happy I did. And I couldn’t thank them enough for all they’ve done for me.

If you have been lucky enough to make it here, chances are you have had a pretty tough go of things. You're tired and broken-- scared and apprehensive, especially if it's your first time in treatment, and the last thing you desire is a long, slow, painstaking intake process. You won't have that here. I can thank STR, in fact, is efficient, effective and effusive with their empathy. The staff cares and it matters. They, in many cases, have walked in your shoes and understand the personal and professional toll your addiction has taken on your soul. Your job is to listen, maintain discipline, and follow suggestions with the belief that if you do, good things will slowly happen. Patience and positive thinking take time, especially if you enter with a truck load of guilt and fear. Yes, like many rehabilitation facilities, especially in this area, STR will have a good amount of young addicts -- kids if you will, so please check your ego at the door and accept the fact that your addiction has humbled you. All I know is that STR succeeded where other more traditional "in-patient" facilities failed. It was intense but balanced. I did not count the days while in Phase 1 or during their incredibly-wise transitional Phase 2 program. The truth is, you can't hurry recovery, If you rush it, the odds are stacked against you. STR's owners, clinicians, nurses, techs and support staff understand the complexities of addiction. They hold you accountable and provide structure and a clean and safe environment. Ultimately, your success is just that -- your decision to commit to changing your life, and that's a real hard decision to make. But if you do, and you really want it, STR gives you an excellent chance of sustained sobriety.

STR has a great program for getting and remaining sober. The housing and counselors are awesome. I have been to rehab before and this one has worked for me. I highly recommend this program. Very supportive during and after my stay. One day at a time...

I would give Steps to Recovery a 10/10. All facilities are clean and updated and overall just comfortable. The steps at Steps are all well educated and friendly. The whole place is generally very inviting and makes your time getting sober fly by and feel productive. Steps would be the first place I'd recommend to anyone who wants to feel like the really belong somewhere!

First the first interaction with Str with admissions I knew this was going to help save my life, I was lost and broken and at my worst, I needed direction and support and this place offered that right from the start! STR connected me with a great clinician provided a lot of insight and even helped my family better understand my process and addiction. Today I know How to cope reach out and even though I am not in their program now I know I can call them! I'm forever grateful that STR was able to guide me when I was broken and reach me so much about myself!

LD

Going to STR was the first step in SAVING my LIFE! I had never been in treatment before and was utterly terrified of the unknown. STR made was caring and supportive from even before I made it to the front door. From my admission phone call to discharge 5 months later (I completed both phase 1 and 2 programs) they were my family! I went in with ZERO intention of continuing to phase 2 but I was surrounded by the most amazing counselors and support staff and knew continuing to phase 2 would provide me with the best possible tools for success with continued recovery. I love that a majority of the staff are also in recovery, understand where you are at, and can relate as they have been where there themselves. STR gave me a new outlook on life and helped me realize I was WORTH saving!

I came to STR after a 24 day stay at a rehab. I was so nervous & didnt want to be the "new" kid again. From the time I got picked up until the day I left I had such a GREAT experience. I looked for EVERY reason to leave the 1st week or two,but when it was time for me to leave I didnt want to leave. The staff actually cares about you & puts in effort to actually help you. Some places only see you for $ and not an actual person who is fighting for their life! STR helped save my life. And give my family back their lives. Thank you STR! 💚

STR has helped me in so many ways. I couldn\'t thank the staff enough for all that they\'ve done for me. Out of all the rehabs and different facilities I\'ve been to, Steps to Recovery is different.. The staff really does care about each and every one of their clients. They take their time and patience with each individual client. You get a connection and build a relationship with the staff and all the other clients during your stay and I love that about STR. I couldn\'t be more grateful for Steps to Recovery and their caring/loving staff and owner!

Alexandra

Steps to Recovery is simply put, the BEST rehab in the area. The entire staff is the most extremely caring, loving, educated, and helpful group of individuals around. I have witnessed EVERY staff member, from the owner to the directors, and even to the wonderful girls at the front desk, selflessly do anything and everything they can possibly do for ANY client, no matter what the case may be. The staff gives it their absolute all and then magic simply takes place. I was there for a little over 2 months then continued for another 2 with their outpatient IOP program. In all that time I have seen many extremes of situations happen to which the entire Steps to Recovery staff resolved with such an unbelievable amount of compassion, love, and delicate ease. I wouldn\'t recommend any other rehab over STR. The center as well as the surrounding property is beautiful, the living facilities in both phases of the program are spacious, updated, and completely comfortable. Steps makes it fun, and at the same time makes you feel completely safe and loved, as they jam pack you with life-saving knowledge and skills. I attended STR ONE time, my only time in treatment mind you, last summer (2016). As of January 1, 2017, with the extensive help, care, and love I recieved from STR, I have obtained SIX MONTHS of continuous freedom since the day I walked through the front door. They saved me and gave me my life back, and it\'s an even better life than before; more than I could have ever imagined. Without having gone there, I would have never accomplished 6 months of straight clean time without ANY substance. They are simply the BEST in bucks.

I have been to many treatments all around the country and have had points of sobriety throughout all of them but after every one, they always ended in relapse. I think anyone who knows addiction knows the success rate and how hopeless a lot of it can seem. Speaking from my own experience, I showed up to StR completely destroyed, beat down, and convinced that I would never be able to stay sober. This place is...special. I\'ve been to maybe \"nicer\" treatments, nicer in aesthetic, and nicer in therapists with fancier degrees or whatever, but I have never been to a place where the staff generally cares this much. I was convinced that I did not deserve to live, that I was the biggest loser on the face of the planet, and they completely flipped it on me and molded me to not only like, but LOVE myself. It\'s so hard to describe how incredibly attentive and caring the staff is without experiencing it. Because I mean most staffs at rehabs care to a certain degree right? I know anyone who\'s been to a rehab has always had that one late night talk with a tech, chain smoking cigarettes, getting that program knowledge or whatever. But here, the staff talks to you, not like you\'re a client, but you\'re just another struggling person at a meeting or something. It\'s such a nice feeling after being in and out of these places feeling like a mental patient, or an idiot, or a child. Now that\'s not to say that they let you roam free, because they don\'t put up with any bullshit that\'s for sure. The therapists are out of this world. Each is so unique and the knowledge across the board is fantastic. The Amenities and beds and the houses are all nice too! If you\'ve been to treatments a bunch of time and are tired of no one caring about you, this place is such a nice breath of fresh air. <3

I recently completed STR\'s Phase 1 and 2 program and my life has been transformed. I have always struggled with addiction and have been to countless rehabs. Nothing seemed to work for me, and I came to STR broken both spiritually and mentally. The staff and community at STR welcomed me with open arms and with their unending support I began my journey of self discovery and healing. I cannot say enough of the staff at STR. Everyone from the owner, down to the clinicians and techs truly care for the clients and their recovery. The housing facilities are modern and well kept. And for those who can\'t afford the out of pocket cost of treatment centers, STR will absolutely work with you and your insurance, even including scholarships. Lastly, STR is located in Levittown, PA, a community full of recovering addicts/alcoholics and 12 step meetings. Many STR graduates choose to stay around for the strong community support in the area.

The staff are all very helpful, many of whom are in long term recovery and therefore able to give sound advice and relate well to the clients. The house is great and there are always different activities we are taken to daily to break up the monotony of daily treatment sessions. I would definitely recommend this rehab to anyone, especially anyone under the age of 30 who is looking for a way to get more structure, as you will have a lot of time to work on life skills that are essential for home life.

Excellent staff, beautiful living accommodations and functional treatment center. Days are split between half-day intensive therapy similar to Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), combined with going to AA/NA/CA meetings in the are 3 times a week, going to a local gym 3 times a week, and going food shopping for the house one time a week. If you work the program they present to you, you will reap the benefits and be that much more prepared to reintegrate into your recovery-oriented daily life. I cannot give enough praise to every single therapist and clinician that works there; all are extremely knowledgeable, resourceful, and passionate about the task at hand. The behavioral technicians are almost all in recovery, which gives clients a support system of people who understand first-hand what is going on in the day-to-day life of being in treatment and in early recovery. Step to Recovery lays out a program that works for the clients that truly want to recover and will do whatever it takes to recover.

STR really helped me in more ways than I ever expected. All the staff members genuinely cared about all of the clients in treatment and were constantly going out of there way for me. My clinician was great and our individual sessions were very helpful. The houses and clinical facility were beautiful. Our process groups and large groups really prepared me with coping skills and tools to stay clean. I am still clean today and am so grateful for StR and what they have done for me. I would recommend this rehab to everyone who needs help.

There are absolutely no words to describe what the people at STR have done for my family, from helping me with my cousin to helping with my sister, and helping myself as well, they have gone ABOVE and BEYOND in every way possible to make sure all of my families experiences have been as smooth and easy as possible during what is one of the most difficult times in anyone\'s life. I could never thank them enough or do enough to pay them back for what they have done. I will try my best by writing this review and sending them a thank you note. Please if you are looking for help for you or a loved one this is the place to go.

Jessica

I attended STR about two weeks ago in hopes to go from phase one house to phase two house. The admissions specialists tell a completely different process of the phasing and how you will be housed. I stayed for over a week giving the center a chance in hoping I would fall into feeling comfortable there but it did not happen. The women's house is so petty. There is constant bickering about who's cooking what and who's doing laundry and just too little space for so many women. The staff is friendly but defiently has their favorites. The rooming situations stunk...which also caused a lot of tension in the house. I ended up leaving after 9 days, I had asked that all my belongings be locked away in the basement out of reach of the other clients first before anything be done! ... I do NOT recommend this treatment facility to anyone or anyone's family members. Overal this is not a safe environment for anyone in early recovery there are much better places in PA that do the right thing when it comes down to someone's life. Integrity is definitely something that is not practiced in this facility. There was no accountability taken in this situation.

I couldn\'t possible find strong enough words to tell you how great this treatment center is. Clean, beautiful housing--excellent staff. The level of care that they provide is just not something that other treatment centers could even come close to rivaling. My stay at STR has truly been life changing. I haven\'t felt cared for as deeply as I did with the staff at STR in a long time. Their clinicians are top notch. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to a loved one if they were to need treatment. Thanks to the wonderful people at STR and their thorough program I will be celebrating a year and a half of continuous clean time. I only have praise for this place.

I have gone to a few treatment centers and have yet to find one that cares for you as much as StR does. The staff is amazing and will always be there if you are struggling. I came through at 18 for my first treatment, first time away from my family, and they made me feel right at home. They have since became a second family to me. This place has not once turned their backs on me throughout my process. I highly recommend sending your loved ones here, they will be in good hands. This treatment center has changed my life for the better and showed me that I could be loved.

I recently attended StR\'s phase one and phase two housing. I have been in multiple rehabs across the country in my early twenties, struggling with constant relapses and brief periods of sobriety. This time, I really put my all into treatment and took it seriously like it\'s meant to be taken. When I first got here I didn\'t wanna be here but everyone from the staff to the other clients to the owner were so welcoming and I just felt comfortable right off the bat. The clinicians are some of the best I ever came in contact with... In many rehabs, clinicians come in and out like a revolving door, its rare to hear about any one therapist with one facility for more than six months but all five or six therapists here have been staff for years and they are all extremely helpful. They all have a different set of skills that can appeal to different types of people. There are groups six days a week from 9-4, at night we either go to a meeting or to the gym and Sundays we have an activity. Alot of times groups can be repetitive in other places but here I was always learning something new, and I\'ve been in so many places I didn\'t think rehab was gonna teach me anything anymore but sure enough I got a whole new outlook on life at StR. I wasn\'t planning on coming to phase two but I had such an amazing experience at phase one that I did decide to come and I\'m so happy I did. I have two months clean now after not being able to get more than like a month for three years. I am so happy I chose to come here I have learned how to live positively, work, laugh, and love myself and others again-while most importantly being clean. Thank you StR for everything you have done for me and welcoming me into the family!!!

This place is amazing. The staff and clientele range from many different ages. The staff is so welcoming and down to earth! A lot of the staff here is in recovery theirselves which makes the whole experience incredible. I wasn\'t in need for anything while here at STR. The owner even runs groups from time to time. You tell me another place where you will go and actually shake hands with the owner? Everyone seems to care and you can tell its from the heart. I would recommend this place to my own family!

I\'m sure this is a fine treatment center if you are under the age of 25. If you happen to be an educated 40-something man, don\'t bother considering their Sober Living homes. Horrible experience, shady neighborhood, disrespectful ignorant \"kids\"is where they placed me. I left after 6 hours. Don\'t be misled by their website pics or staff\'s description of living facilities. I kept wondering why they sidestepped my questions about the house location. My fault for not inspecting first and trusting them. If you wish to recover in a frathouse atmosphere, go for it.
