Located southwest of Houston in Hungerford, Texas, StraightWay Training Center (SWTC) provides faith-based, long-term residential care for individuals and families struggling with addiction to alcohol and drugs as well as, what the facility identifies as, other “life-controlling behavior.” SWTC is one of just nine Texas treatment facilities (2.1 percent of 431 total) to offer residential beds for clients’ children. The center, founded in 1975, serves clients from across the U.S. and overseas.

The 15-month residential program at StraightWay Training Center in south Texas is based in intensive Christian education, psychotherapy, and a work program. Clients are asked to commit “their life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ,” upon admission, according to the facility’s website. Prior to intake, prospective residents submit psychiatric records and a current physical exam report to the center. In Texas, Straightaway is among the 21.8 percent of non-hospital facilities to provide long-term residential care.

The primary modality of treatment at SWTC is Belief Therapy, which combines counseling with religious training designed to address family and other relationship challenges. Residents also receive life skills training, three months of vocational training, and/or GED preparation or college preparation. The facility also offers three months of transitional support as they establish residence and jobs or schooling off-site. In Texas, just over one-third (37.8 percent) of rehab facilities offer employment counseling or training.

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff. According to its website, StraightWay Training Center operates under a registered faith-based exemption from substance abuse treatment facility licensure in Texas.

StraightWay Treatment Center is structured with separate wings for men and women (including married couples for the initial stages of treatment), courtyards, and a common chapel, gymnasium, and game room. Accommodations are dorm-style, with bunk beds, and residents should expect to participate in daily chores and exercise. The center provides 24-hour supervision, with residents' visitation restricted for the first two weeks and permission to leave campus required.

REVIEWS has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, affiliated friends or family, or employees. However, feedback submitted to other third-party sites at the time of this writing is heavily polarized. On Google and Yelp, 10 and 16 reviews, respectively, were split between one-star ratings and maximum five-star ratings. [1] [2] Likewise, the 12 "unrecommended" Yelp reviews also revealed a split between one-star ratings and five-star ratings.

The ratio was flipped (more negative) among five ratings on Facebook, while each of the two reviewers on granted the center just one out of five stars.[3] [4] A majority of reviews referenced treatment received 20 or more years prior to this writing.

In general, positive reviewers expressed gratitude for the facility’s dedicated staff, valuable counsel, and religious emphasis. Those who criticized the program shared concerns about separating families during treatment, an overbearing religious approach, and inconsistent application of standards.

According to the SWTC website, there is a monthly charge of $750 for room and board. Adolescents may stay on-site for $185, and room and board for children under the age of 12 is $135 per month. SWTC does not accept insurance.
