Summit Malibu Treatment Center Philosophy

Summit Malibu is owner-operated and located in an intimate, private location on 5 acres in a gated community with sweeping ocean and canyon views. The focus is on individualized treatment, with an emphasis on one-on-one therapy. We use various modalities including DBT, CBT, EMDR, Biofeedback, and Relapse Prevention. We are an alternative to AA facility.

Areas of Specialization

  • Aftercare Support
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.

  • Process Abuse Treatment
Not all addictions involve mood-altering chemicals. The term “process addiction” describes the unhealthy use of behaviors (including eating, gambling, sexual activity, shopping, internet use, etc.) that has spiraled out of control and into the realm of addiction.

Over the past 30 years William Oswald has established himself as a pioneer in the alcohol and addiction recovery field. At the Adult Substance Abuse Program of Southern California (ASAP) he was one of the first to expand the scope of addiction treatment into mainstream medical facilities. In 1988 he founded Avalon Treatment Centers at Van Nuys Hospital, the first center to provide a broad range of social and therapeutic treatments that significantly reduced relapse rates. In the 1990s he established Lumax Mental Health, a company specializing in day treatment programs for dual diagnosis patients at area hospitals, and went on to direct business development for New Seasons Behavior Health Center, one of the first centers to utilize neurocognitive treatment for addiction. Mr. Oswald was also instrumental in creating Cocaine Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship that has helped thousands.

Summit Malibu, located in a gated Malibu, Calif., community, offers medically supervised detox along with short- and long-term luxury residential rehab for adults struggling with addiction and dual diagnosis. The facility bills is located in a Spanish villa situated on five acres of private land.

All clients begin with the short-term residential program, the Primary Care Program, which lasts 28 days and focuses on detox, where necessary, as well as stabilization. An optional Extended Care program adds 60 or 90 days, or more for those who require further treatment.

Summit Malibu follows the disease concept of addiction. The center's treatment programs are built around the core values of individualized treatment and plenty of one-on-one therapy - each client receives more than 80 hours of individual treatment a month. The 12-Steps do not form an integral part of treatment, but clients may attend meetings as an optional extra should they choose, as well as SMART Recovery meetings.

Programs draw from a range of evidence-based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), biofeedback, and alpha stim -- in which a small electric current is pulsed across the head to relieve depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other symptoms. Clients also participate in relapse prevention training, life skills and communication training, and education about the nature of addiction. A family program includes education and brief strategic family therapy.

According to the facility's website, several staff members are in recovery themselves. The center also has affiliations to four physicians. The clinical director is a licensed clinical psychologist, and the center also employs marriage and family therapists.

The center accommodates 14 clients at a time and their pets, where appropriate. Residents live in private or semi-private suites with either ocean or canyon views, and can enjoy amenities including a spa, a swimming pool with views of the Pacific, and a fitness area with exercise equipment. Meals are prepared by an on-site chef and served on a patio overlooking the ocean, and the chef can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.

The amenities include a lap pool, jacuzzi, scheduling and transportation for all off-site appointments and bocce ball among others. Holistic offerings include yoga, spirituality sessions, boxing, massage, acupuncture, equine therapy and sound therapy.

The four reviews submitted to to date were very positive. Two alumni polled on the facility's offerings awarded the center five out of five stars for its family program and counseling options, adding that they would strongly recommend treatment at this center to others.

Alumni repeatedly praised the individual therapy they received and the intimate atmosphere. They also praised the amenities and the facility's cleanliness.

At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded five alumni reviews, four of which were positive. On Yelp, three "recommended" reviewers rated the facility only one out of five stars.[1] Five "unrecommended" Yelp reviewers rated it five out of five stars.[2]

Positive reviews on Yelp praised the professional medical staff, particularly its individualized approach. Alum Lauren wrote: "The staff truly care about you from the techs to the counselors." The negative reviewer criticized the facility for its lack of insurance acceptance.

To date, no loved ones have submitted reviews to Two "unrecommended" loved ones submitted reviews to Yelp, however. One loved one rated Summit Malibu a perfect five stars and another rated it only one star. The positive reviewer praised the facility for its compassionate care, while the negative reviewer complained of high costs and a bad refund policy.

Treatment costs $48,000 for a month, and $120,000 for 90 days. Summit Malibu accepts private insurance and is in-network with Signet, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Humana. The center does not offer financial assistance. Though one presented a negative opinion, two of the four alumni who rated the facility were satisfied with the cost.

I was a client of Summit Malibu in May 2019. The staff was extremely kind and caring, and nursed me back to emotional and physical health. The therapists ran effective groups and were astute at offering individualized care. The chef was phenomenal - I can’t speak highly enough of him.

Coming to Summit was my third time in rehab. This is the only place I have gone that gave me real individual therapy, like 9 times a week, and helped me deal with my issues. The groups were pretty good and it was more than just listening to a therapist--we did a lot of things as part of them, and even got to do a nutrition group each week where we got to cook. The food was awesome and they also took us on weekly outings which were very cool. I had a nice private room with a tv, nothing over the top, but nice and the bed was really good for sleeping. The best part though was the staff- they really made me feel like it was a big family and I belonged.

At least 5 individual therapy sessions a week, small/intimate, family like atmosphere. More beach outings would be great (once a week isn't always enough) I was here for 90 days, they helped me walk through a divorce, deal with trauma and untreated depression as well as my addiction. I now have 2 years of sobriety, and this place is still my "home".

They were better than what they looked like actually. After 90 days at Summit I had the tools needed to go back out into world with a new support structure to help me build a new life. Now, almost 2 years sober I now work there, at the place that saved my life. I am truly blessed.
