Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Swedish is Seattle’s largest medical system, founded in 1910. The Ballard campus is a full-service, acute hospital located in northwestern Seattle. Alongside a full array of medical services, the center offers the Swedish Addiction Recovery program, which serves individuals struggling with chemical dependency. The center provides evaluation and diagnosis services as well as medical detox. In addition, the facility offers an intensive inpatient program for pregnant and postpartum women only.

As part of the nonprofit Swedish Medical Center, Swedish Addiction Recovery is among the 44.4 percent of rehabs in Washington State that operate as private nonprofits. It's also among the 2.8 percent that offer a hospital-based detox program.

Clients don't need a referral from a physician in order to be admitted, but they will need to complete an intake interview. These interviews, along with medical examinations and information from any referring healthcare professionals or other related sources, assist Swedish clinical staff in assessing the best mode of treatment.

If necessary, detoxification takes place on a special unit at Swedish Ballard. Detoxification varies from individual to individual, but for most patients, the detox process lasts between three to four days. After detoxification, patients may be referred to appropriate programs.

Swedish Addiction Recovery offers a 26-day inpatient program for pregnant women, called the Chemically Using Pregnant Women’s Program (CUPW). Treatment incorporates evidence-based practices including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is used at 54.3 percent of Washington facilities and the trauma-informed Seeking Safety model.

Individualized spiritual care addresses issues such as grief, loss, and shame, while group sessions focus on codependency, stress management, relationships, and relapse prevention. Educational and exercise sessions, medication maintenance, couples counseling, and 24-hour nursing care are also offered.

Treatment is designed to help individuals understand addiction and its consequences and to pursue positive changes in behavior and mindset. An array of treatment modalities is available for each personalized care plan. In addition to traditional counseling sessions, clients may participate in nutritional counseling, spiritual care, psychiatric services, and recreational therapy.

Friends and family members are encouraged to be involved, and participation in self-help groups, such as 12-Step, is recommended. Women who have completed the CUPW program are eligible for aftercare services including sober housing and continuing addiction treatment.

Swedish Ballard's treatment team includes physicians, nurses, and state-certified chemical dependency counselors, as well as consulting psychiatrists, dietitians, spiritual counselors and occupational and recreational therapists. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five out of five stars for the level of staff support provided.

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback. However, Swedish Addiction Recovery has mostly positive feedback on secondary sites at the time of this writing, with a 4.3 out of five-star average rating based on six reviews on Google.[1] The reviewers repeatedly praised the professionalism and kindness of staff, and compared treatment favorably to programming received at other facilities.

"I have seen a lot of medical and therapeutic professionals in my 28 years... I can say with confidence that [the doctors] at swedish addiction services are both in the top 5 professionals in the medical field that I have ever dealt with. They KNOW THEIR STUFF and they are SO incredibly devoted to caring for their patients," Michael wrote in a representative comment.

"Very professional, personal treatment. Clean facilities, easy access, very secure," was the appraisal of the single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date. They gave the facility five stars for the overall quality of its care and its family involvement, and four stars for its counseling, and indicated that they would recommend treatment at this center.

Employment review sites Indeed and Glassdoor offer mixed reviews, skewing positive, for Swedish Medical Center as a whole. The network has average ratings of 3.6 out of five stars based on 125 reviews on Indeed and 2.6 out of five stars based on six reviews on Glassdoor at the time of this writing.[2] [3]

The reviewers tended to praise their coworkers while describing a sometimes stressful environment with problems such as poor management and excessive workload that could negatively impact client care. "Pros: Lot's of really great, knowledgeable, talented people work here. Cons: Upper management is not connected to staff," one reviewer wrote in a representative comment on Glassdoor.

According to the facility’s website, Swedish Addiction Recovery accepts many private health insurance plans and Medicare (which is accepted at 20.2 percent of Washington-based facilities). The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five out of five stars for its pricing.
