In a private, park-like campus an hour northwest from Indianapolis, Sycamore Springs treats adults and adolescents struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. From its recently-built, 48-bed facility, Sycamore Springs offers inpatient, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs. Detox is not available here.

Individualized treatment plans are developed through comprehensive assessments that consider each client’s psychological, behavioral, medical, and vocational needs. Accordingly, treatment length depends on the personal goals set by a client and their treatment team.

Adults and adolescents in need of inpatient care are supported by a 24-hour nursing staff in a structured environment. A typical day in inpatient treatment, which may include up to 10 hours of programming, features individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based counseling sessions, e-learning, anti-craving medication, and a number of alternative and expressive therapies such as art, music, pet, and yoga. Additionally, families are heavily involved in the recovery process through conferences, therapy, and lunches.

The first of two outpatient options here, the PHP track is designed for individuals seeking structured care in a less restrictive setting. For more than five hours per day, PHP clients partake in evidence-based programming that incorporates the nationally-reputed Hazelden program, 12-step facilitation and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Featuring similar services, the IOP track engages individuals in nine to 15 hours of programming per week.

Seeing recovery as a “lifelong process,” Sycamore Springs provides ongoing alumni support groups for all graduates.

The multidisciplinary treatment team consists of physicians, registered nurses, patient care assistants, social workers, and recreational therapists.

On its private, park-like campus, Sycamore Springs houses up to 48 individuals in shared bedrooms with a private bathroom. When not in therapy, residents are encouraged to take advantage of indoor gym equipment, go for a stroll around the adjacent lake, or rest up in the center’s spacious lounge.

A full-service cafeteria provides clients with a full range of meal options three times a day, and snacks are provided throughout the course of the day. To limit distraction during treatment, phone calls are made only at designated times, and hour-long family visits are typically scheduled on weeknights or weekends.

At the time of this writing there have been two alumni polled by Both alumni gave the facility strong overall ratings. The alumni both gave five out of five stars for the facility’s treatment effectiveness, accommodations & amenities, and meals & nutrition. One alum gave strong marks across all metrics.

He strongly agreed that there were many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference; that the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; and that he would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab. He also wrote that the treatment program helped immensely. Both alumni agreed that the facility was clean, well-maintained, and had friendly staff.

The other alum who was polled, also anonymous, agreed that the treatment center was helpful, writing “overall this was actually a pretty decent place. one of the better ones i have been to.”

Additionally, 21 Google reviewers gave Sycamore Springs an average rating of 2.8 out of five stars, and some former clients had concerns about how staff treated them.1 Former client M.S., who gave a one-star rating, had a bad experience and wrote “It honestly felt as if she were trying to get me to leave, and no attempt was made to restore the relationship between I and Sycamore Springs. I am truly and utterly displeased with the level of care provided by Sycamore Springs - I regret giving them the opportunity.”

Alum S.C., who also gave the facility one star, was not happy with how he was treated. “I would never urge anyone who was suffering not to seek help; that being said, please seek help elsewhere. I have never seen fellow human beings be so degraded.”

Despite these negative experiences, others left extremely positive feedback. S.B., for example, wrote: “I understand the choice to come to an inpatient program may see daunting or overwhelming... Please don't wait until its too late.. do not go anywhere else in the region... Sycamore Springs will make the difference!”

At the time of this writing, one friend or family member has been polled by The anonymous loved one gave the facility three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, three stars for accommodations & amenities, and four stars for meals & nutrition.

The loved was indifferent when polled across several different metrics concerning treatment at the facility, giving a neutral response when asked if the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; if the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders; and if the facility strictly offered a faith-based program.

The loved one was not satisfied with several of the amenities and policies at the facility, and disagreed that the facility offered excellent leisure, exercise, and extracurricular options; that the facility had high quality holistic offerings; and that the facility’s cell phone and visitation policy was fair. The loved one also added that the facility is not L.G.B.T. friendly.

Sycamore Springs accepts private pay and is in-network with an extensive list of private insurance companies such as Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Humana, and United Behavioral Health. A financial counselor is available to assist with coverage benefits.

The facility itself was nice, but was a very medical setting. There weren't any outside options for activities, and there wasn't a gym of any sort to be able to exercise in, which I think is important in recovery.
