Teen Challenge New England and New Jersey Philosophy

At Teen Challenge New England & New Jersey, treatment recovery emphasizes Christian faith and biblical principles, with a focus on commitment, service, and integrity as core values to help recovery from drug and/or alcohol abuse. The goal is to offer hope and motivation, and provide the emotional training and life skills for young men to become happy, healthy and productive members of society.

Areas of Specialization

  • Aftercare Support
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.

  • Holistic Therapy
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.

Twelve years of drug addiction drove Jacqueline Strothoff to participate in every rehabilitation effort presented to her as she desperately struggled to overcome her addiction. Those years were devastating as she was committed several times to psychiatric hospitals and incarcerated for criminal activities. During one of those stays in a psychiatric hospital in 1974, Jacqui experienced a life-changing encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. Upon her release, she entered New Life For Girls, a one year Christian residential discipleship program in Pennsylvania. From there, she enrolled in a ministerial training program at Rev. David Wilkerson’s Twin Oaks Leadership Academy in Texas, where she met her husband, Bob. They spent the next several years working in Teen Challenge centers across the country and then settled in Springfield, Missouri where Jacqui earned a degree in social work from Southwest Missouri State College. Jacqui has ably served the Lord in a variety of capacities in churches and ministries. Her life and testimony has impacted thousands of hurting lives. Today that impact continues as she serves Teen Challenge New England and New Jersey in a senior leadership role. Jacqui is the proud mother of two adult children and the ecstatic grandmother of two adorable grandchildren.

Teen Challenge is a faith-based network of rehabs for individuals struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, founded in 1964. Teen Challenge New England & New Jersey, located in New Haven, Conn., offers services for adult men over the age of 18. The organization offers residential treatment services, which typically last 15 to 21 months, along with outreach to prisons and communities in need. Detoxification services are not available on-site.

It is important to note that all of Teen Challenge’s programs are based heavily on Bible study and Christianity. Treatment at Teen Challenge New England & New Jersey is centered around learning new life skills and developing new patterns of thinking and living. This is done through personal studies, class lectures, chapel services, and job skills training. Clients are encouraged to bond to become a strong family unit.

Life skills training is a big component of the treatment offered. Guided by biblical values, clients are taught how to avoid life patterns that led to their addiction. Students who have not yet earned a G.E.D. have the chance to do so during treatment. Clients who successfully graduate from the program can enroll as an intern and serve as a role model for incoming clients at a Teen Challenge campus.

This is a faith-based treatment program where the staff consist of trained alumni who are now in recovery themselves. Staff are not required to have a medical background in addiction treatment.

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings however, the one alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility five out of five stars for the food and cleanliness at the facility and three stars for accommodations.

There is one alum review that has been submitted to Rehabs.com at the time of this writing. The reviewer, S.C., entered the following a family intervention. This reviewer chose the facility based on a referral from friends/family and was treated for substance abuse. S.C. stayed for more than 90 days and has been gone from the facility for less than 12 months. The alum felt that the treatment was not worth the cost, writing, “Teen Challenge's success rate is low. Some of the so-called leaders of the program returned to drugs and were fired.”

S.C. gave the facility five out of five stars for meals & nutrition and the cleanliness of the facility; he rated accommodations as three stars. S.C. also gave the facility three stars for the facility’s staff support and fairness of the facility’s cell phone and visitation policy.

S.C. did not receive aftercare after leaving the facility and reports that he did relapse one month after leaving. The alum states he would not re-enter the facility again nor would he recommend the facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab. S.C. wrote, “All they do at Teen Challenge is study the Bible, memorize scriptures, pray pray pray all day day day. NO COUNSELING… All they do is pray things away and expect that to work, which it doesn't.” The alum gave the facility an overall score of one star and reported that it was not worth the 15 months spent there.

In contrast to S.C.’s review, the facility’s Facebook page (which Teen Challenge has the ability to edit) received an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars based on 15 reviews. A number for former clients posted positive comments, including Ryan who called Teen Challenge a "lifesaver," and Michael who wrote: "This place is amazing you can't leave the same because the power of GOD dwells in this place!!!"1

At the time of this writing there has been one friend/family member polled by Rehabs.com. The client, D.R.G. gave the facility three out of five stars for the facility’s accommodations and meals & nutrition. She indicated that the facility did not strictly follow a 12-step model but that there were many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference and the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders.

The loved one also strongly agreed when asked if the treatment plan was affordable and/or payment plans, scholarships, or financial assistance were made available; if the facility strictly offered a faith-based program; and if the facility staff were experienced and well-trained. D.R.G. indicated that the program is in need of more funding but, overall, she wrote, “Excellent program with a very high success rate. Long history, over 50 years.” The loved one strongly agreed that she would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab.

Teen Challenges is privately supported by many different individuals, churches, businesses, and foundations. Clients are asked to have a loved one contribute, if possible, to help underwrite the costs of the program; but according to the facility’s website, no one is turned away due to their inability to pay. Private medical insurance is not accepted.
