The Brook Retreat Philosophy

Brook Retreat is a non-medical, non-clinical recovery retreat designed to inspire individuals struggling with addiction to achieve sobriety through Twelve Step methodology. Utilizing educational coursework, drug-testing, supervision, and a highly structured sober living environment, residents are taught to manage their addictions and apply practices in honesty and accountability for lifelong sobriety.

Areas of Specialization

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

  • 12-Step
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

ABOUT THE BROOK RETREAT

Located in the rural town of Plympton, Mass., about nine miles from historic downtown Plymouth, the Brook Retreat: Plympton is a long-term sober-living facility for adult men in early recovery. The home provides peer support, safety, education, and structure conducive to sustaining sobriety. Detox is not offered on-site. There is a women’s program of the same design in Weymouth.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The admissions process at The Brook Retreat’s Plympton program begins with a phone interview. The interview is to determine if the program is a good fit. Once approved, clients schedule an admission time Monday-Thursday. Clients participate in orientation to familiarize themselves with the program. To be admitted, clients must be sober and pass a drug screen and breathalyzer test.

The Brook Retreat’s Plympton program is specifically designed for adult men who have recently completed treatment at a residential program and are actively engaged in the 12-step process, which heavily informs treatment at the Brook Retreat. The Steps are divided into three phases each lasting two-three months, the first phase is the most intensive. The program uses work therapy, recreational therapy, and counseling as well.

Along with attending daily 12-step meetings, the participants adhere to a schedule of Big Book study sessions, step work instruction, drug testing, employment counseling, and meditation. Residents also participate in weekly recreational and team-building activities.

Clients work with employment counselors to identify their specific skill set and strengths. Counselors help clients find suitable work in the community. They also coordinate counseling services to help clients keep their jobs.

Family participation is encouraged throughout treatment. Family members are encouraged to visit on Wednesdays, and the staff is available to offer support and answer questions regarding the home and the 12-step process.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at the Brook Retreat comprised of men who are in recovery and active in the 12-step program. These men are not professionally licensed, and no psychiatrists or clinicians are employed.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date all rated The Brook Retreat five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition. Client B. praised the facility for its well-structured programming, beautiful yet private grounds, and staff knowledgeable about the 12 Steps. Client Jeff wrote: “the Guest has to want to put 110% into this or it does not work. I know these men personally and they truley do care about every guest at this facility.”

On its official Facebook page, which it can manage, The Brook Retreat earned an average rating of 4.9 out of five stars from 41 reviews to date. [1] Alumni praised the effectiveness of the program, and many called it the “best.” In a representative review, alum Alex wrote: “This is one of the best programs around if you are really serious about staying clean. This program taught me a new way to live and allowed me to regain my freedom. The success rate of this program speaks for itself. Really good house run by good people that are also in recovery working the program and genuinly want to help others.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of eight loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date, five gave The Brook Retreat five out of five stars while three rated it only one star for treatment effectiveness. Loved ones praised the facility for its no-nonsense structure and heavy use of the 12 Steps in treatment. Loved one P.L.M. wrote: “Send your loved one here if they are ready to change their life. The healing power of this program is based on a real twelve step experience delivered by those who are passionate about the process.”

The three negative reviewers complained that the staff was uneducated and irresponsible, with one accusing them of using intimidation tactics. Loved one Thomas also criticized the facility for its “exorbitant” expenses. The facility responded to Thomas’s review, writing: “Some may perceive holding guests accountable as intimidation tactics, but I can promise that behind this perceived intimidation is love and an honest desire to help … Staff members are college educated but their recovery experience is their own … an all in cost of $12,000 dollars for six months of quality treatment with a good track record is quite reasonable.”

FINANCING

The Brook Retreat reported to Rehabs.com that six months of treatment costs $12,000. Fees for the first month of treatment are due upon arrival.

I can't speak for the males residence, however the women's residence is ran terribly. There are two female managers that were recently hired and my daughter was told to leave over false accusations. Both female managers are terrible example for the women attending the program attempting to get well. I regret sending my daughter there 100%, new managers are seriously required. This program did more harm than good to my daughters life and sobriety.

The Brook Retreat is the best long term, mens only facility in the world. Recommended stay is 6-9months, but they fly by while making lots of new friends. No narcotics of any kind are allowed during your stay and drug and alcohol testing is regular and mandatory. Most non-narcotic medications are allowed but ultimately they want to help you wean yourself off of certain medications. They use the AA method and a patient would be learning from the best teachers of what the Big Book of AA has to offer. They keep you busy but not overworked in any capacity and are open, honest, and helpful too all clients. The management all truly care about their residents and want everyone to get better. A beautiful house and grounds with lots of privacy just down the street form a shopping mall and restaurants for easy jobs when the time comes. Overall, I had one of the best experiences of my life in the 6 months I lived there.

I went to a program structured exactly like this. I have volunteered to speak and help at this program on several occasions. When a guest and although difficult and I did not understand the requirements and intensity of the program it all made sense in the end. I will be 5 years sober in a couple months due to this exact program. Guest may not know it but if they get the opportunity to attend this program they have truly hit the lottery in regards to an effective method in not only staying sober but turning their whole life around and opening up future possibilities that they have only dreamed of. The only catch is the Guest has to want to put 110% into this or it does not work. I know these men personally and they truley do care about every guest at this facility. Its not work its their life.

But that these people truly cared about my loved one but in fact ended up putting his life in jeopardy with their irresponsible decisions no excuses. If they truly cared about the addict as they say they do they would have made a more reasonable decision that didn't jeopardize someone's recovery.

Thorough, no-nonsense 12 step program. Send your loved one here if they are ready to change their life. The healing power of this program is based on a real twelve step experience delivered by those who are passionate about the process. The facility is clean and highly structured. Highly recommend this group.

This program not only saved my sons life, it made him into a better man then I ever imagined possible. My son is sober, reintegrated with our family, finished college, works full time and helps others to recover from addiction. Three staff members in particular are caring, supportive, educated in addiction recovery. This safe, well run program works!!! An investment well made for my sons life!!!

Really quite a poorly run institution by under experienced and uneducated young men who stand on intimidation and ego as a means of controlling behavior. Do not send you son here. Frankly, the expense is exorbitant, and lastly, completely against the traditions of AA - of which they claim to be/endorse.

Official Facility Response

We are very sorry that you had such a bad experience at our facility. Our program works because we set rules and expectations in place to help keep our guests on the right track. Some may perceive holding guests accountable as intimidation tactics, but I can promise that behind this perceived intimidation is love and an honest desire to help. Many of our alumni have stated that this structure and high level of expectation is exactly what they needed to recover. In other words, it works for many, not for all. Staff members are college educated but their recovery experience is their own. No staff member of the Brook Retreat has not done and experienced what each guest at the Brook Retreat is asked to do and the expectations they experience. We feel this is a contrast to a majority of treatment. Regarding cost, we feel that as a program that takes guests directly from the early stages of recovery to completely leaving treatment, an all in cost of $12,000 dollars for six months of quality treatment with a good track record is quite reasonable given the market rate of the industry. It is our opinion that we are less costly given the staff and offered structure. Again, I am sorry you feel this way and hope that whatever your situation is you have found an alternative solution that fits your needs and desires. We do what we do because we have seen it work for many including ourselves; and we will continue to do what we have experienced and can assure has worked for us.
