About the Facility

Reviewed by Our Contributors

A program of The Counseling Center, Inc. in Portsmouth, Ohio, about two hours from Cincinnati and Columbus, The Stepping Stone House (SSH) is a long-term residential treatment program designed for adult women with children as well as pregnant and nonpregnant women seeking recovery from alcohol and drug addictions. Pregnant women with addictions to heroin, OxyContin, and other opiates also have access to medication-assisted detoxification services.

Relative to other facilities in the state, SSH is quite unique: requiring women make an initial commitment of at least 90 days, it’s one of 71 (17.4 percent) that offers 30 or more days of residential care as well as one of just 49 (12 percent) with on-site childcare services.

Women begin their stay at Stepping Stone House with an orientation, intake, and a comprehensive assessment of their physical health, education, finances, and family. Pregnant women receive prenatal care, education, and newborn assistance as well as access to board-certified obstetricians and gynecologists.

Participants can expect to meet regularly with licensed counselors for intensive group therapy, individual counseling, and topic-specific, educational groups which make use of evidence-based treatment modalities. They’ll attend 12-step support groups in the local community of Portsmouth, all while their children receive childcare on-site and therapy.

Women also spend their time developing skills essential to independent living, such as money management and budgeting, and receive employment training, a service that’s available at just 42.5 percent of facilities statewide.

SSH offers outpatient addiction care for women seeking treatment that does not require them to live on-site. Women who’ve successfully completed treatment can “earn diapers, wipes, new clothing, care items and so much more” via continuing care.

According to the program’s official brochure, the Stepping Stone House treatment team includes licensed counselors, case managers, and residential assistants. Along with just 52.8 percent of facilities in the state, SSH is accredited by CARF or its treatment, prevention, and case management services.

As with other Counseling Center, Inc. programs, Stepping Stone House offers 24-hour staff assistance and maintains a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to weekly drug tests.

Transportation is also provided, a service that’s available at just 57 percent of facilities statewide.

While has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s alumni, Stepping Stone House has mixed feedback and ratings of 3.8 and 3.4 out of five stars based respectively on eight Google reviews and five Citehealth reviews. Some reviewers, like T.T., credited the facility with saving their (or their family member’s) lives, or, like J.A., found the program organized and accommodating and its staff friendly.

Others, by contrast, considered SSH a “joke,” claiming that it “needs to be shut down for good.” “It was like a frat house,” B.H., whose review appeared on both Google and Citehealth, wrote. “My daughter was aloud her cell phone almost the whole time . The girls took selfies flirted with men online . My daughter relaspe one week of being home . Do not recommend run run run !!!! Now she is in Woman’s Recovery Center much better . Be careful where you go .”

At this time of writing, feedback provided by a pair of survey respondents on their loved one’s experiences was mixed. One found the facility “Very good [at] what they do," awarding the facility a perfect 10 out of 10 stars to indicate how likely they’d recommend the program to others. The other, Maggie, indicated they wouldn't recommend treatment with one out of five stars, adding: “They seem truly concerned but dirty and [disorganized].”

Stepping Stone House accepts private insurance and Medicaid.

The facility also runs a Care Closet - a supply of diapers, toys, children and baby clothes, cookbooks, bottles, and other new and gently used items.
