The Exclusive Hawaii Philosophy

The Exclusive Addiction Treatment Center is a secluded, small eight-bed facility tucked away on a private estate offering a state-of-the-art non-12 step, holistic addiction treatment program. We believe to conquer addiction, it is essential to treat the whole person rather than a single symptom. We address chemical imbalances created by alcohol and drugs and focus on releasing previous trauma and unresolved pain.

Our proprietary Core Belief Restructuring approach restructures the hidden beliefs that otherwise hold clients back and combines experiential learning with cognitive learning.
We offer one of the most customized treatment programs in the country with exceptional services and amenities. From the very first day clients entrust themselves to our care, and running concurrent with their addiction recovery program, clients will participate in relapse prevention and our individualized New Life Direction process. Together we help clients assemble the building blocks they need to live a renewed and passionate life and teach the skills to overcome old addiction triggers. By the time clients leave The Exclusive Addiction Treatment Center, their new life has already begun!

We teach clients how being authentic, vulnerable and connected will naturally take the place of addictive behaviors. We share our philosophy of non-judgment and unconditional acceptance, and love of self and others.

We’re committed to creating a cocoon of safety and warmth that allows clients to immerse themselves fully into the program. We realize that when clients are facing their shadow and their past, it may be the hardest thing they’ve ever done, and we make it as comfortable as possible.

Areas of Specialization

  • Individualized Treatment
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.

  • Experiential Therapy
Experiential Engagement Therapy is designed to make use of the way the human nervous system is wired to learn. Experience-based therapy is retained more than traditional-style therapy, where you sit and receive information or advice passively. Experiential Engagement Therapy is learning about yourself, your emotions, your beliefs, and your addictions by engaging fully in your experience – not just thinking, but doing! Experiential Engagement Therapy (EET) requires your full engagement and participation in experiencing your emotions, past trauma, and unresolved pain. With Experiential Engagement Therapy, you will learn how to feel and learn from the discomfort and anxiety that arises in your physical body. You will learn to walk through the discomfort and physical pain. In this uncomfortable place, you will find the deepest understanding of yourself, your belief systems, your addictions, your depression, and your anxiety.

Set on a 16-acre private property overlooking the azure waters of the Pacific, The Exclusive Addiction Treatment Center in Hawaii is a private, for-profit facility, which make up about 13.7 percent of all treatment facilities in Hawaii; it is one of the 16 (9.5 percent) of Hawaii facilities that offer long-term residential treatment services. The luxury facility offers holistic detoxification and treatment for adults struggling with substance use disorders.

Programming is not 12-step-based, rather using a proprietary treatment modality developed by the center’s founder. Amenities cater to executives. The facility, opened in 2011, is also equipped to address co-occurring mental and physical health conditions, including eating disorders.

A majority of clients are 35 or older, according to The Exclusive Addiction Treatment Center website, although some are in their early 20s. Most clients have previously attempted rehab elsewhere. Treatment plans are offered for 30, 60, or 90 days.

The admission process begins with a 90-minute assessment phone call. Clients start treatment with a 10-day, acupuncture-based detoxification process which also includes nutritional supplements, yoga, meditation, and infrared sauna sessions. Throughout their stay, residents have access to weekly bodywork sessions such as massage and Reiki.

A major component of The Exclusive’s treatment concept is Core Belief Restructuring (CBR), which is based in cognitive behavior therapy. Therapists work with clients to develop self-acceptance and -awareness, purpose, emotional fluidity, and behavioral adjustments. Trauma-oriented eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is also available, along with mindfulness classes, and art and music therapy.

Clients who complete a program of 30 or more days at The Exclusive in Hawaii are invited to participate in 30 days of transitional aftercare, which involves phone or videoconference counseling.

The Exclusive Addiction Treatment Center’s medical director is a doctor of osteopathy, according to the facility’s website. Treatment team members also include life coaches, recreational therapists, and consulting physicians, psychologists, and certified substance abuse counselors. Staff therapists are trained in the program’s Core Belief Restructuring, with additional training ranging from master’s level counseling to nursing. The staff-to-client ratio is about 4:1, and team members are joined by a resident therapy dog. The center is one of 105 (62.5 percent) of Hawaii facilities that are CARF-accredited.

The Exclusive of Hawaii residence is an eight-bed, 10,000-square-foot mansion surrounded by tropical foliage and grazing horses and cows. Clients can choose a private or shared bedroom and enjoy access to an on-site fitness facility, waterfall swimming pool, hot tub, and outdoor patios with ocean views. Chefs prepare organic meals and residents may participate in the cooking.

Clients regularly go on such recreational activities as helicopter rides, dolphin swims, and private golf or tennis lessons. A family support program allows loved ones to visit clients on a basis appropriate to each client’s treatment. Personal cell phones and laptops may be used during designated times.

The two alumni polled by to date rated The Exclusive Addiction Treatment Center of Hawaii perfect five stars in treatment effectiveness, holistic treatment offerings, staff’s level of experience and training, and nine other metrics. Both clients praised the facility’s beautiful location and compassionate staff, with one writing that staff members “practice what they preach.” Weaknesses cited included a lack of intravenous nutrient support. Additionally, one alum rated the center’s affordability only one star, the other granting four stars.

A single Yelp review for The Exclusive reported problems with billing, [1] as did another alum on Facebook. [2] However, two other alumni on the facility’s official Facebook page, which the facility can manage, awarded a rating of five out of five stars.

Two loved ones polled by offered praise similar to alumni reviewers. Both highlighted the facility’s unique program and kind staff. M.B. described “real deep level effectiveness.” They selected five-star ratings for 11 out of 15 metrics measured, including family participation and treatment for co-occurring disorders. Available counseling options, however, received just three stars from each. The loved ones indicated that treatment was affordable, with ratings of four and five stars.

By contrast, in a single review for The Exclusive, an alum’s spouse reported that the program was not restrictive enough for clients to change. [3]

Reviews from the three Exclusive Hawaii staff members polled by all emphasized the center’s customizable treatment and dedicated staff. Their perfect five-star ratings for 12 out of 15 evaluated categories matched feedback from alumni and loved ones. Employee Z.M. wrote in a representative review: “The staff approaches all clients with honesty, compassion, integrity, and support for growth and change.”

The Exclusive Hawaii accepts out-of-network benefits from most medical insurance companies, according to the rehab center’s website. A $5,000 non-refundable deposit is required and an official facility Facebook post indicates that the cost of one month of treatment begins at $39,000.

This was my 4th treatment center and i am so grateful and blessed to have gone. I have never felt so loved and cared for in a treatment center before. The staff is AMAZING the food is AMAZING the accommodations are (again) AMAZING. I had the highest quality care I have EVER received. The groups are so useful and I felt so prepared for real life after. The longest I could stay sober before I went was 2 months. After I left I was sober in total for 4 and a half. I did slip but they gave me the tools to get right back to where I was and I have almost a month again. Their after care program has helped so much. Twice a week I speak with one of the counselors and she is AMAZING. THANK YOU GUYS FOR GIVING ME MY LIFE BACK. I have never felt more happy or free or prepared to handle life. If you’re looking for an amazing treatment center in the most beautiful healing environment THIS IS THE PLACE. I’d go back for vacation if I could but I’m now employed full time (which they prepared me for). My life is amazing beyond my wildest dreams. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Beautiful, serene property and cozy home. Every meal is made to order, with love and is so amazing. The staff are the most committed, loving, kind, people who are doing what they were born for. The owners are so creative with meeting every person idividuals needs. Truly an amazing place to heal. Sometimes the cows moo really loud. I was court ordered for 90 days. I was taking adderral and also had autoimmune issues. I was so sad and torn to leave my kids who were 12 and 14 at the time and getting there was half the battle. Smelling the Hawaiin air, seeing the beautiful home and property and being met with such kindness and compassion eased my anxiety. The days were filled with teaching, discovery, art, play, exercise, delicious meals, laughter, tears, rest and self care. They are teachers of life with a lot of experience. And they actually practice what they preach. Some days I was really angry or sad and it was all accepted. That's the part I was most blown away by. There's nothing I could say or do that would make them treat me differently. They love and accept and are compassionate and kind because that's what they choose to do and be. No matter how I am that's how they are. I felt safe to explore the traumas of my past and look at my beliefs and how they shaped my life and to do it without judgment. I went back for more healing a few different times after that for a total of six months. The Exclusive Hawaii is truly a place of healing and has forever changed my life because of the vision, dedication and love that they live and give.

The Exclusive excels at customized experiential therapeutic work, which focuses on the underlying issues of the substance abuse. The center is like a loving family; all the staff care deeply about their work. The internet can be slow on cloudy days, yet there's plenty of offerings to keep one engaged on working on themselves. The therapeutic work, while delivered with loving acceptance and care, may be some of the most challenging experiences of your life. While it may be difficult to look at the pain, trauma, and denial connected with substance abuse, the therapists here will guide you steadfast in this process.

Deeply compassionate and well trained staff, offering a very effective yet unique approach. Wish it was available in more locations. When I placed my son in the Exclusive Hawaii program, I was feeling very afraid. He seemed so troubled and so distant for so many years that I doubted that I would ever be able to have a meaningful relationship with him again. Toward the end of his 30 day stay, I went to the center and spent a couple of days going through the process with him. It was not easy... he had a lot of anger with me and they helped him to release that anger by allowing him the safe space to hurl his intense feelings and rage directly at me. I was stunned, but as I sat in that line of fire with openness and a willingness to hear him (with a lot of help and coaching from the treatment staff) I was amazed to observe him go through a transition from deep wounding and pain to a place of re connection and love. Four years later that love is still present and he is sober and moving forward in many positive ways. I am so grateful!

Strengths: location, staff, treatment modality...excellent. Weaknesses: no intravenous nutrient support. The amount of support from the entire team throughout is unheard of. The method is revolutionary. I feel transformed since starting their 2 months ago. It was an unforgettable experience.
