About the Facility

The Guidance Center (TGC) serves as a local community health provider for Atchison, Jefferson, and Leavenworth Counties in Kansas. Services include crisis assessments, referrals, and outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with substance use disorder and psychiatric disorders. The center, which launched in 1937, prioritizes the least restrictive approach to mental health care, collaboration with other social service agencies, and culturally appropriate practices, including making some services available in Spanish as well as English. TGC is a nonprofit organization, which make up about 50 percent of all substance abuse treatment facilities in Kansas.

Clients experiencing an emergency related to serious and persistent mental illness can receive assessment and stabilization treatment in lieu of or prior to hospitalization, via referrals, phone, or walk-in service. Individuals who have received a dual diagnosis of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders (such as depression or anxiety) will be directed to a specialized treatment track addressing both together.

Outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug abuse is available to adults and adolescents at three TGC clinics. Treatment modalities are determined based on an initial assessment each client undergoes, and include individual and group therapy. Families are encouraged to be involved. TGC also offers employment support and hosts community education sessions regarding mental health and addiction.

The treatment team includes a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, a psychologist, and multiple master's-level licensed social workers. Also on staff are advanced practice RNs and certified alcohol and drug counselors, according to the facility's website.

The two alumni polled by to date, both of whom participated anonymously, gave TGC mixed feedback. One awarded the facility five out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness and wrote: "It helps you shape your view of what wellness really is." The reviewer did note that the facility had to work within a low budget, however. The other reviewer described the staff as informative, well-educated, and caring, but noted that the environment felt "sterile inside instead of comfortable and relaxing." That reviewer gave the facility three stars for its treatment effectiveness.

On Google[1], TGS earned an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars based on 11 reviews. Of the eight former clients who left comments, six described the facility as a compassionate place that provided a solid option for treatment services. "The people have always been kind and very helpful... Therapists are awesome. Case managers are spectacular!" Kayla wrote in a representative review.

TGS also received one five-star rating on its Facebook page[2] (which the facility can manage). "Best place to come," Victoria wrote. "I had drug and alcohol classes there, they did an awesome job. I use them for therapy and their staff is great."

The center offers a sliding fee scale and accepts several health insurance plans, according to the TGC website. It is among the 67 percent of Kansas facilities that offer a sliding scale fee.

They work with low income families on a sliding scale. It felt sterile inside instead of comfortable and relaxing. They have informative and caring psychologists who are younger, but we'll educated so they are up to date with several methods of treatment including some holistic plans. The college nearby works with them. Unfortunately, it is so tight nit and everyone knows almost everyone that privacy is an issue. That is a smaller town though.
