The Haven is operated by SpectraCare, one of Alabama’s 77 private, non-profit treatment providers, offers psychiatric and counseling services in residential and outpatient settings at centers throughout Southeast Alabama. The Haven provides residential treatment for men and women five miles northwest of the small city of Dothan, Ala. The Haven is designed to treat underserved communities.

Anyone can apply for the treatment programs, but priority admission is given to pregnant women, IV drug users, and individuals with dependent children. It is one of only 33 facilities in Alabama that offers treatment programs specifically for pregnant women.

The Haven encourages participation in support groups such as 12-step fellowship and Celebrate Recovery. The 12-step program can be used as a means of primary treatment and aftercare treatment. It is used in up to 48% of U.S. treatment facilities.

The other fundamentals of treatment are individual, group, and family therapy; lectures and discussions; recreational therapy; and family strengthening groups. An alum’s loved one polled by to date also indicated that treatment included religious services.

Clients who complete the primary treatment programs gain access to the aftercare program. Aftercare consists of weekly meetings for alumni, as well as referrals to SpectraCare’s supportive housing facilities, in appropriate cases.

The Haven employs physician, counselors, and specialists in alternative treatment methods. The single alum polled by to date rated staff's level of training and experience a perfect five stars, while one loved one rated the same category four stars.

The residential facilities are staffed 24/7 by a team of medical and counseling specialists. During their stay, clients participate in a variety of group and individual activities. The facility is also equipped to provide services to pregnant women and children including academic and housing support. The two individuals polled by to date rated the center a perfect five stars for its accommodations and amenities, three and four stars for its meals and nutrition, and four and five stars for its cleanliness.

The single alum polled by to date gave the center five out of five stars in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its level of staff support, connectivity, visitor policy, facility cleanliness, and exercise and leisure offerings. “Aftercare consisted of meetings: AA and N/A,” alum James wrote.

At the time of this writing, The Haven had a 3.5 out of five-star average rating based on four reviews left on CiteHealth,[1] and one reviewer on Google rated the facility five out of five stars.[2] On CiteHealth, an alum wrote in a review representative of positive feedback: “My overall exp at the haven was life saving. the staff was wonderful, and i was given the tools i needed to get back on track!!" Another one wrote in a review representing negative feedback: “Not qualified, bad experience in intensive outpatient treatment. Incorrectly diagnosed.”

The single loved one polled by to date gave the Haven five out of five stars for its overall effectiveness, but would not recommend treatment at this center. “Strengths include: group therapy daily, counseling one-on-one, religious services, and cleanliness,” they wrote, giving the center four out of five stars for its family program, counseling options, and treatment for co-occurring disorders.

However, they also indicated that the center was lacking in extracurricular activities, giving it just two stars for its exercise and holistic options, and writing: “There were not enough activities like exercise or watching tv.” They also indicated, anecdotally, a high relapse rate among graduates in their acquaintance.

SpectraCare accepts most major private insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, as well as self-payment. It is one of the 35 facilities in Alabama that accepts Medicare, as well as the 78 that accept Medicaid. Financial assistance is available for uninsured clients. The single individual polled to date on the center’s affordability gave it two out of five stars.

As a leading treatment organization in the area, SpectraCare coordinates with other organizations to hold events for the community. These events focus on a number of different community needs including removing drugs from the community. Local community buy-back and turn-in programs for drugs make it possible for clients to remove the potential for relapsing by helping the community get rid of its unwanted drugs.

Strengths include: group therapy daily, counseling one-on-one, religious services, and cleanliness. However, there were not enough activities like exercise or watching tv. I don't think it's worth the money, many I have talked to have returned over and over so obviously their forms of treatment are not working.
