ABOUT THE PAAR CENTER
Located in the community of Porterville, Calif., the PAAR Center is one of California’s 699 (53.3 percent) private, nonprofit substance abuse treatment facilities. It offers a full continuum of treatment programs through its six, gender-specific facilities. The PAAR Center provides a long-term residential treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and transitional housing for adults seeking treatment for substance abuse. The center also offers detoxification services.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission to the PAAR Center, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse assessment to determine an appropriate level of care. If necessary, clients may be referred to the treatment provider's four-bed detoxification center, which may include a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program that uses medications to treat withdrawal symptoms. In California, 40,790 (9.9 percent) clients participated in MAT programs.
If a client requires detoxification and/or a structured environment to achieve and maintain sobriety, clinicians may refer the individual to one of the center's gender-specific residential programs. The PAAR Center is among the 54.5 percent of California facilities that offer treatment options specifically for women, and the 52.3 percent of facilities with programs just for men.
The PAAR Center's residential programs last 90 days making it one of the 440 (33.6 percent) long-term treatment facilities in the state. It adheres to a therapeutic community model of recovery, which emphasizes peer support and a structured environment as keys to success in early recovery. To treat its clientele, the PAAR Center blends evidence-based treatment with 12-Step immersion and specialized educational classes.
During residential treatment, clients are introduced to the principles and practices of the 12-Step model of recovery. Clients may attend on- and off-site 12-Step meetings, study fellowship literature, and perform associated "step-work." Clients may also regularly attend 12-Step workshops to learn how to effectively process through the steps.
In addition to 12-step participation, the PAAR Center also offers a schedule of education classes to help clients succeed in recovery and improve coping skills. Through presentations, lectures and educational media, the center offers specialized educational classes on anger management, domestic abuse, stress management, problem solving, and medication awareness. Residents also participate in recreational activities, and loved ones are invited to participate in a family awareness and education program.
Once a client completes residential treatment, the PAAR Center may encourage clients to transition into the facility's intensive outpatient program and/or transitional living facility. The center's transitional living facility provides a safe, supervised environment while clients attend outpatient-based programs and re-enter the community. Clinicians also provide comprehensive discharge plans, which include referrals and linkages to community-based resources, such as vocational training and educational opportunities.
