ABOUT THE PLYMOUTH HOUSE

Lying in the shadow of Mount Washington in northern New Hampshire, The Plymouth House offers residential treatment for adult men and women. Detox services are not offered on-site — clients must not use alcohol and/or illicit drugs within 72 hours of being admitted to the facility.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Residents initially sign up for a two-week program, though they can extend their stay if necessary. The program at The Plymouth House is highly structured and deeply-rooted in the 12-Steps. Days begin with an optional 6 a.m. breakfast, followed by yoga, a morning goals group, meditation/Chapel, and a mid-morning Big Book group.

After lunch, clients participate in highly intensive group sessions and optional inventory workshops; late afternoon recreation can include hikes. Additional groups or outside AA meetings follow dinner, and the day ends at 11 p.m. with a nightly wrap up.

Family involvement is highly encouraged — nightly 10-minute phone calls and regular letter writing are allowed, and family members may visit every Saturday.

Aftercare coordinators are available to help clients set up extended treatment if necessary, and alumni meetings are held on-site twice a week.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Plymouth House notes on it’s website that it is not a medical facility and does not employ “health care professionals, counselors, therapists, or social workers.” Rather, the staff consists of “seasoned Twelve Step practitioners” who have many years of collective experience in continuous recovery. The website notes that on average, the staff to guest ratio is 1:4.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients share simple, cozy, single-sex bedrooms with one or two other clients. Bathrooms are also shared, and residents are responsible for keeping their personal areas neat and clean. Meals are served in a communal dining room.

The facility is situated on six acres, which provides plenty of opportunity for recreation and outdoor activities. There are walking and jogging trails, as well as regularly scheduled group hikes. Other amenities include a fitness room and a yoga studio.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing there have been six alumni polled by Rehabs.com. On average, alumni gave the facility 2.5 out of five stars for its counseling options, and 3.8 stars for its family participation policies and its holistic offering. The alumni also gave The Plymouth House 4.2 stars for its cell phone and visitation policies, 4.7 stars for cleanliness, and 4.2 stars for staff experience and training.

One alum, A.J.E., gave the facility four stars for accommodations & amenities and five stars for meals & nutrition. The client entered rehab for substance abuse and stayed for 30 to 60 days. A.J.E. has been out of the facility for over 12 months, completed treatment successfully, and did not enter sober living after treatment. He did not relapse after leaving the program.

Secondary review sites reveal satisfaction with the facility as well, with an average rating of 4.8 stars from nine individuals on Google.[1] Most recently at the time of this writing, alum D.M. wrote, "I have the most respect for the P house."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing there have been three friends or family members polled by Rehabs.com. The anonymous loved one of a client gave the facility three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and five stars for accommodations & amenities and meals & nutrition. She agreed when asked if the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; if there were many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference; and if she would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab.

She wrote that a strength of the facility was that it was supportive and had great policies; however, she disliked the facility’s 12-step model.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, the cost of treatment at The Plymouth House starts at $265 per day, $1,855 per week, and $7,420 per month. Payment is due upon arrival, and the facility accepts cash, cashier’s or certified checks, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express. The facility does not accept insurance.

It was for alcohol rehabilitation, fourteen months later I am still sober and am active at AA meetings. The entire facility are reformed alcoholics and treated us with the understanding of having been there.

The Plymouth House is a spiritual retreat dedicated to focusing on the 12 steps of recovery. It's not anything fancy that deals with DBT or CBT or emotional therapy. It's just recovery as laid out in the BIG BOOK, and what kept alcoholics sober back in the day. It has changed my life.

Counselors need to improve. Food was great. Fitness and leisure activities were above average. Counselors and owner are condescending egomaniacs.

Staff, 1:1 partnership, support, follow up, community, and ability to help you get into aftercare, were all strengths. It's not big enough.

Rural setting, experienced and compassionate staff, excellent facility, effective family interaction with staff of people who can share experiences and recoveries, strict adherence to the rules. Loved one with long-standing alchohol problems including rehab experience in other facilities.

It's described in their literature as a 12-step retreat, & that's exactly what it was.

The staff is in recovery themselves, which was a beneficial aspect of the facility. However, not everyone is ready for the 12 steps. It's life changing... I'd go back but I hope I never have to.

This facility excels in all areas. I cannot say enough good things about it. However, a weakness was the cost. It does not take insurance due to the fact that it is a spiritual based program and does not have a medical staff. It would be nice if it was made more affordable.

Wrote letters to a loved one who has lots of time to write! They are supportive and have great policies. I felt the fact that they use 12-step was a weakness of the facility.

The things I learned at Plymouth House changed my life. You can't put a price on that. For the first time I understood the 12 Steps, how to work them, and how to apply them to daily living. I learned more about myself there, about my part in things, keeping my side of the street clean, doing the next right thing, I could go on and on. Everyone there is amazing. The place is magic. I call Plymouth House 'Big Book Boot Camp'. Sounds intimidating, but I can't imagine that there is a better place to learn about recovery and how to live free of the obsession of drugs and alcohol. Amazing, awesome people who walk their talk.

There are no licensed counselors and meetings with counselors - it is all twelve step meetings and classes. You do the 12 steps out of the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous while you are there. You can chose to stay after 28 days to continue to work there and help others with their step work - and this is free of charge.

My son learned the skills he needed to function without drugs. He started work on the 12 steps, and continues the work today. At 16 months sober, he is the person he always dreamed of being. Compared to others it was fairly priced. But, for people on a budget, it was still a lot of money. I attend a weekly group for loved ones of addicts.

This facility is well kept and in a tranquil area. Although it might not have the bells and whistles of some expensive rehabs, it was a pleasure to stay there. The staff are recovering addicts. Their stories were inspirational and often times, hilarious.
