The Right Step - Plano Philosophy

Right Step has been treating patients with chemical dependency issues for more than 20 years. The Plano, Texas location, which is located about 20 miles north of downtown Dallas, offers intensive outpatient substance abuse and alcoholism treatment for adults. Clients receive 10 hours of treatment a week, while still being able to participate in school, work and other everyday activities. Caring, licensed professionals create a safe, supportive environment where clients can learn to confront addictive behaviors, develop healthy coping skills, identify potential relapse triggers, and lead a fulfilling life in sobriety.

Areas of Specialization

  • Client & Family Support Groups
Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.

  • Intensive Out Patient (IOP)
Patients who undergo intensive outpatient treatment continue to live at home and sometimes go to school or work while participating in a highly structured treatment protocol that is focused on ending substance abuse. Programs vary in terms of how much treatment patients receive, how often and for how long. Some facilities design individualized intensive outpatient treatment programs.

Jason Powers, M.D

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Powers joined Right Step and Spirit Lodge staff as chief medical officer in 2006. Originally trained and board certified in family medicine, Dr. Powers re-dedicated his career to helping addicts and their families after he personally faced the addiction issue in June of 2003. He is now also board certified in addiction medicine and passionately helps addicted individuals and their families embrace the healing path of recovery. He does not rigidly fit everyone into one mold, respecting that individual differences matter. He combines holistic treatment modalities with traditional therapies when treating his patients.
Dr. "P" was honored with the Sierra Tucson's Compassion Award and recognized as a Top Addiction Doctor in Houston for three years running by H Texas magazine. He will soon become a published author (Central Recovery Press) when his comprehensive book about addiction, "When The Servant Becomes The Master", is released in April 2012. He is currently secretary/treasurer of the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and is a local expert for The Partnership for a Drug Free America-when he’s not out of town lecturing or sharing his experiences elsewhere in the community. We are proud to have him on our team—not only for his engaging personality, but because he takes time to understand his patients and work with their families.

I am a licensed professional counselor and a licensed chemical dependency counselor who began working in the addiction treatment field in the 1980s. Prior to becoming affiliated with Right Step, I managed three different residential programs and two outpatient programs. My skill sets include interventions, therapy, crisis intervention, case management, and developing and overseeing high-quality addiction treatment programs.
Our master's level therapists provide counseling, process groups, relapse prevention planning and free aftercare for two years for adults and adolescents.
Our programs have a reputation for helping people who have lost hope that they'll be able to turn their lives around. I approach each client as an individual rather than using a cookie-cutter approach and emphasize practical skills that will help you sustain your recovery long-term. Over 80% of clients who commit to follow the recovery process with us go on to stay sober years later. 360 Guide

Founded in 1990 and now operating more than 15 facilities throughout the State of Texas, The Right Step is one of the largest networks of addiction treatment centers in the Southwest. The Plano location, located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, is one of the 190 (44.1 percent) of private, for-profit organizations in Texas that provide substance abuse treatment. It offers outpatient programming and aftercare services for adults seeking treatment for addiction. Medical detox is not available on-site.

Prior to enrollment, all clients participate in a confidential assessment to help determine the most appropriate level of care for their needs. The Plano center’s primary offering is an outpatient program that is intended for individuals who do not require a high level of care. It is one of the 301 (69.8 percent) outpatient programs in the state. This program may be used as a stand-alone treatment or a step-down option for those who have completed more intensive treatment.

The outpatient program consists of 24 sessions, and most clients complete at least three sessions, or 10 hours of programming, each week. Both evening and daytime sessions are available. The Right Step uses 12-step methodology and Positive Recovery, a strengths-based approach to treating addiction. Clients attend weekly 12-step meetings off-site to promote community involvement and continued care management.

During treatment, clients participate in educational workshops that focus on relapse prevention. They learn skills that help them cope with life changes and stress, as well as to manage their daily lives so that they can avoid a relapse. Family counseling is also made available to help clients rebuild their family support networks. Staff members also incorporate spirituality awareness into the program.

The center offers two aftercare options. Clients may enroll in a standard two-year aftercare program consisting of weekly group counseling and access to an alumni network. Alternatively, Javelin Continuing Care Services is designed to help alumni maintain sobriety through more individualized programming. The 12-month plan offers regular check-ins with a sobriety coach, help with goal setting, regular drug screening, life skills training, family engagement, and ongoing education.

The Plano location employs licensed addiction professionals. The organization’s leadership team includes a physician and a registered nurse. The facility also employs master's level counselors to coordinate treatments and provide counseling services. The Right Step is one of 119 (27.6 percent) of Texas treatment facilities accredited by the Joint Commission.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni. However, Matt, the one Google user to submit a negative review, indicated that the staff insisted that he quit his job while undergoing treatment.[1] The facility’s owner submitted a response, encouraging Matt to call back.

The single loved one polled by at the time of this writing gave the Right Step’s treatment effectiveness four out of five stars and highlighted the “Great staff and Location.” They noted that some of the facility’s furnishings seemed dated, but gave four out of five stars for its holistic offerings, level of family participation, and counseling options.

The facility works with most major insurance providers including Aetna and United Healthcare.
