Dr. Lofgran makes all the medical decisions for the residents at the Center. Upon admission, vital signs are monitored and a Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) is completed if necessary. After the initial evaluation, any necessary medications are placed in lockup and are taken by the resident under the supervision of a member of the treatment team. The resident enters treatment activities as soon as initial assessment is completed, during the first day of residency. Laboratory work is available, if indicated by medical assessment. Additional medical care will be given according to individual needs. These services are optional and it is the patient's responsibility to pay for them.

ABOUT THE WALKER CENTER - RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT

The Walker Center is an Idaho nonprofit that has been providing alcohol and drug addiction treatment since 1976. The Walker Center's facility in Gooding, Idaho offers residential treatment and medically monitored detox services for adults struggling with chemical dependency. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, only four percent of rehabs in Idaho offer on-site detox in a residential setting. Outpatient services are available at the organization’s other location in Twin Falls, Idaho.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients undergo a medical evaluation, which consists of a physical and discussion of the individual’s behavioral history. Medications are prescribed if needed, and additional medical care, such as teeth cleanings and eye exams, may be recommended.

Treatment is gender-specific and typically lasts 28 days. According to the facility's website, the Walker Center’s residential program combines 12-step methodology with evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Along with attend 12-step meetings and step-work guidance, programming includes group therapy and one-on-one counseling, and medication management is available for individuals struggling with co-occurring disorders. In addition, clients participate in experiential-based therapies, such as yoga and an outdoor challenge course.

The Walker Center also offers a comprehensive family program and aftercare, which includes referrals to 12-step groups, additional psychologists, and other contacts in the recovery community. Those who complete treatment are encouraged to participate in the Alumni Support Group for free.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center's website notes the treatment center is led by a medical director who is certified as an addictionologist. The treatment team consists primarily of certified alcohol and drug counselors, as well as licensed practical nurses (LPN) and clinical social workers (LCSW).

According to the organization's website, the Walker Center is licensed by the State of Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and is nationally accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and is a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP). A 2017 SAMHSA survey indicates that 11.3 percent of rehabs in Idaho are CARF-certified.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility's website indicates men and women live in dorm-style rooms on gender-specific wings of the 46-bed residential facility. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, the average number of designated beds in residential facilities in Idaho is 19. The campus is smoke-free, and all forms of tobacco are prohibited. It's too soon to rate the treatment effectiveness for our young adult son, but we are grateful for this program and very happy with what we've seen so far. The counselors we met were caring and professional. The 3-day family session was very beneficial and we almost missed it. Our son's counselor who called to tell my husband about family week, did not give any detailed information or express how valuable or important it would be. Had it not been for our daughter strongly urging both of us to go, my husband would've missed it--and that would've been unfortunate. Even though I felt that our son's counselor could've been more assertive in his communication with us, our son liked his "laid back" approach as a counselor. The meals are Standard American Diet, but thankfully, they include a well-stocked salad bar. This program is based on the 12-steps, but only step 1 is required to complete the program. The required AA meetings may not be the best fit for everyone, but the overall program seems like it would be beneficial for anyone.

The facility has excellent customer service and is extremely willing to help you! They make you feel welcome and accepted for who you are. The price was a little higher than desired, but worth it for the treatment. The facility is extremely compassionate and helpful in every way when it comes to achieving your own personal goals. They truly want what's best for you and are willing to give advice and treatment that works for you rather than just prescribing random things.

This was a horrible treatment center!! I personally went through it and you are just a number there, I never felt like the staff cared about you they were just there to do a job. No aftercare options do they provide you with either. 28 days residential is just not enough for most people I've known myself and a handful of othera that have went through all have the same opinion and have relapsed. I just finished a 90 day residential treatment and did 120 day stay and am now in a transitional program they offer and the Walker Center doesn't even come close to it. I for once in my life have a desire to be sober and live a life worth living. I would not recommend the Walker Center to anyone trying to stay sober, plus the price is outrageous for the level of care they provide you with. The facility is nice though, if they would get new therapists and staff and make it longer they could go somewhere.

I liked the family weekend. Would like to see more post-rehab options in Boise. Would also like to see options for relapses, like in my ex-husbands case. He was on his own . Caring and friendly staff but not a lot of holistic/alternatives to 12 steps. Not much follow up on patients.

They offer tools for recovery, counseling, and require a 12 step program in conjunction with their treatment facility. Strengths: Outpatient and relapse prevention. Weaknesses: No residential treatment facility in Boise.

They are a very positive facility and that was an awesome party. I felt that them keeping men and woman separate was a downfall.

The time management they enforced was awesome and the staff was great. They incorporated family very well as well, and they provided great one on one time. However, there was not a lot of free time and they needed more to eat.
