Treatment Center Setting
Top of the World Ranch Milan Philosophy
We are a Holistic Addictions Treatment Center for Men. We offer an excellent mix of traditional evidence based therapies in conjunction with outdoor experiential. Nature does much of the heavy lifting at Top of the World Ranch. We are not a traditional 12 step treatment center, but see great value in the 12 steps as part of our clients and our own recovery. We attend a variety of meetings weekly. We offer 315 acres of rolling forested land coupled with outdoor enhancements. We see growth in recovery as being both incremental and having opportunity for cathartic shifts to take place. We create fertile ground for both. We have purpose built a brand new all private rooms residence for 24 men. We know the value of contemplative and private time coupled with the intensity of our full interactive program. We get it. Top of the World Ranch. Set yourself free!
Areas of Specialization
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
Drugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.
Though not all rehab facilities offer “medical detoxification,” all people with an addiction to drugs or alcohol will experience intense physical and emotional changes and discomfort as their bodies react to withdrawal of the addictive substance. Many people use the term “detox” to refer to the period of time (ranging from a few days to a week) when the body is reacting to an addict’s decision to stop using.
Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
Process Abuse Treatment
Not all addictions involve mood-altering chemicals. The term “process addiction” describes the unhealthy use of behaviors (including eating, gambling, sexual activity, shopping, internet use, etc.) that has spiraled out of control and into the realm of addiction.
This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.
Creative Arts Therapy
Writing, making art or engaging in theater can be deeply therapeutic for people working to recover from addiction. Many facilities offer one or several forms of creative arts therapy as a way to help patients learn to express their feelings in productive ways.
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
The focus of cognitive behavioral therapy (also called CBT) is helping people to understand the thoughts and emotions that underlie their addiction with the goal of learning new, healthier and more productive ways to understand and express themselves.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a highly specific, research-validated form of therapy that can help people overcome traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. With EMDR, a trained practitioner uses bilateral stimulation, eye movement and touch to stimulate parts of the brain as a patient recounts certain experiences and memories as a way to more thoroughly process uncomfortable, painful feelings.
Trauma & Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT)
Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT) uses the brain’s innate ability to adapt to change in a healing way, essentially “retraining” the brain to respond differently to familiar memories of trauma or pain.
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.
Happy anniversary to us! One year since we left our son in your care. And what an amazing year it has been. We could not be prouder of our son! His desire to take the things you taught him and expand on them… he is truly the person now that I always knew he was. We cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for him and our family. I continue to be thankful every day that such beautiful people, and such a beautiful place, exists, and that we found it!
I am not quite sure where to begin, as there really are no words to express the gratitude I feel for you, and what it is you do there .. I guess I will start by telling you that I am happy and so healthy, and am living a pretty amazing life! It's been almost 7 years since I left the ranch, and I have remained clean and sober ever since. I think about you often, and I am never quite sure if you really realize the impact you have had on me. This place has the ability to heal you, not only physically but emotionally, and if it fits or works with your belief system spiritually too... I was pretty broken when I first walked through your doors, and honestly wasn't even sure if I could do it. Instead of making me feel bad or shameful about my addiction, you treated me with love and kindness, you treated me with respect. You built me back up, and gave me a fighting chance at recovery...I believe it's by no mistake that I found your centre, and exactly when I needed to, and I am not sure if I ever really told you thank you ... So from the bottom of my heart thank you!!
my son Matthew is a client at the ranch. He was there in the fall of 2013. Mark, I am writing this letter to say I am so very grateful to have found your Ranch and your caring staff. We are in Ontario, and when I learned of my sons addiction, starting making calls to rehabs centers. I had a great feeling about Top of The World, and I was right. I could go on and on with how very impressed I am with the ranch. I have to say that Michael, who lives at the , and has been such a support system, not only for my son, but for myself and my husband. He gave us hope and support, even when we didn't know if Matthew would accept the help. The compassion and caring that he gave us is priceless. From the moment I first called Top of The World, I knew I was not alone. That caring and support continued on with everyone I have met. I know people always take time to complain about something when they are not happy.....I wanted to take this short time to say THANK YOU for caring.
I have been to many Treatment centers. TOW Milan is absolutely beautiful. I visited this place for a week. Their Residence was unexpectedly superb. Had the best sleeps. The Main Lodge is unlike any other treatment center...from the counselors' offices, the programming rooms, the games and leisure rooms, to the Chef's culinary skills...i was in awe. The staff, effortlessly, made me feel welcomed. I felt I belonged, I was safe. That's an experience I always sought out. I also explored their Grounds...there's so much to do. And to the core, I experienced their American Native Tradition Sweat Lodge. Thank you Mark and your caring, wonderful staff. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Meet the Staff
Master of Counseling, Executive Director
After many years of fighting tooth and nail, years of denial, trying to get and stay sober on my own, trying to convince myself that it would be different this time, I was given a moment of clarity to see myself as I truly was. I saw the reality of my addiction, I saw the damage that I was causing, I suddenly understood that the problems I drank about were not outside me – the problem was me – and that the change that was needed had to be me. Chaos turned into purpose and meaning. We opened our doors in BC Canada in 2005 and have taken our excellent program to our center in Milan IL

Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor Addictions Counselor
I was trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy during my master’s program, but I also utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and EMDR in my treatment approach. My desire when working with individuals is to understand their basis of guilt and shame, which prompts them to hold unhealthy beliefs about themselves and therefore leads to the use of substances and then subsequently the development of addiction. In addition to my clinical work I have also had the opportunity to be an adjunct instructor of psychology at two separate collegiate institutions within the area.
Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling from the University of Iowa
My journey with addiction and recovery has come full circle. After receiving a Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling from the University of Iowa, I worked briefly as an Addiction Counselor. After that I worked five years as a program evaluator for existing treatment programs. Later in life, I found myself in the midst of my own battle with alcoholism and ended up in a residential treatment program. I discovered that no amount of education and knowledge could solve my problem, that in order to get well needed to change my thinking, my life.
