ABOUT TORRANCE MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER
Located in Torrance, Calif., Torrance Memorial Medical Center provides comprehensive, outpatient-based treatment programs for adults and adolescents (ages 10 to 18) struggling with chemical dependency**. The three-phase outpatient programs are provided through the hospital’s Thelma McMillen Center. The center also provides medication-assisted therapy (MAT) for individuals struggling with opioid dependency.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, clients undergo an initial, no-cost assessment to assist clinicians in forming an individualized treatment plan. Typical treatment last nine months. The age-specific programs are divided into three comprehensive stages: intensive, transitional, and continuing care.
While each phase differs in the frequency of sessions — progressively less intensive over time — the treatment approach is a blend of 12-step immersion, psychotherapy, and educational classes. Throughout treatment, clients participate in individual, group, and family/marital counseling sessions, as well as attend workshops on anger, depression, denial, and grief. In conjunction with treatment sessions, clients are required to attend community-based 12-step meetings.
During the intensive phase, which lasts six to eight weeks, clients meet four to five times per week, while the transitional phase consists of three weekly meetings for six weeks. Once a client completes the transitional phase, they will meet for group therapy once a week, for 24 weeks. During this continuing care phase, clients also attend four individual counseling sessions. Additional private therapy sessions are available as necessary. Throughout treatment, loved ones are invited to attend educational presentations and participate in multi-family counseling sessions.
Medication-assisted therapy (MAT) may be incorporated into the outpatient program to assist adults who are struggling with opioid dependency. If MAT is utilized, clients must also attend opioid-specific process groups and educational classes.
Under the direction of a clinical psychologist, the treatment staff is comprised of psychiatrists, licensed substance abuse counselors, family therapists, child and adolescent psychologists, and nurses.
