Owned by the Kent-based mental health provider Townhall II, Kent, Ohio’s Horizon House offers a 90-day residential and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program for women. Outpatient-only treatment for men is available through one of Townhall II’s other programs. Medically monitored detox is not offered at Horizon House or any other Townhall II programs.

All clients are assessed upon admission and residents of Portage County and pregnant women are given priority for admission.

Treatment is based on a structured daily schedule that includes group and individual counseling, family therapy, and 12-step participation. Women who have experienced abuse or trauma have access to specialized counseling, and all clients have access to individual case management to check progress and make sure they have the support they need.

Most residents complete the program within 90 days, and have the option to go on to live in a supportive sober-living center.

The treatment team is made up of licensed master’s-level clinicians with backgrounds in addiction and substance abuse.

The facility operates out of a modern building a block from the Cuyahoga River in central Kent. The living environment is home-like and designed to offer a safe and nurturing space for women to heal.

Residents' children are allowed to visit at scheduled times through the week, and may stay overnight on weekends.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has received positive feedback from four alumni at the time of this writing, which included high ratings of 4.25 out of five stars for the program's overall treatment effectiveness and its accommodations, as well as 4.75 stars for meals and nutrition. "They are there to help you or your loved one through everything," one anonymous reviewer wrote, while another commented on the "kind" and "good" staff.

The anonymous alum surveyed on the program's level of family participation, affordability, and ability to treat co-occurring disorders rated these metrics four out of five stars. The exercise and leisure options, as well as holistic offerings, received mediocre three-star ratings from this alum. Likewise, another anonymous alum felt the program could use more exercise opportunities.

Four reviewers on CiteHealth rated the facility an average of 2.5 out of five stars.[1] Included in these four was an alum who left a glowing review: “I owe my life to Horizon House and Townhall II. The staff is very understanding and cheerful and the Counselors I had were fantastic. They got me sober, gave me hope and changed my life in unspeakable ways.”

Loved ones who submitted reviews on CiteHealth were more critical of the facility than alumni. One anonymous reviewer left a one-star overall rating and wrote "I wouldn't send anyone here. The mental abuse they put the family's threw is unreal." Another complained of "arrogant" and "self-centered" staff, while another felt their granddaughter was unfairly discharged for anger issues.

Horizon House is funded through a Women's Special Services Grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services and the Portage County Mental Health & Recovery Board.

Whenever possible, residents are expected to contribute food stamps and a portion of their general assistance to help pay for room and board.
