Tri-County Mental Health Services provides a wide range of mental health services across the central and western regions of Maine, including the counties of Androscoggin, Franklin, Oxford, and Northern Cumberland. The nonprofit organization has multiple sites with many programs; however, the Lewiston facility offers mental health care for children and adolescents, as well as treatment to adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders on an outpatient basis. Residential treatment is available at one of its sister facilities. Within the state, Tri-County Mental Health Services is among 43.7 percent with special programs for clients struggling with co-occurring disorders.


At Tri-County Mental Health Services in Lewiston, adult clients seeking care for substance use disorder undergo an initial assessment to determine if outpatient treatment is appropriate. If residential treatment is recommended, the client will be referred to another facility within the network.

Outpatient treatment includes one-on-one and group counseling and psychiatric assessments and treatment for chemically dependent clients who are struggling with additional mental health challenges. Group treatment includes Seeking Safety workshops, which address both substance use and trauma history, as well as dialectical behavior therapy, offered by 53.3 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in the state.

Specialized tracks for both mothers, pregnant women, and military personnel are also available, as well as a Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP). Within Maine, Tri-County Mental Health Services is among 32.7 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities with special programs for DUI/DWI offenders..

For children and adolescents, services focus on mental health and trauma recovery. Treatment may include psychotherapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR), multi-systemic therapy (MST), as well as medication management.


Tri-County Mental Health Services is affiliated with the Maine Association of Non Profits (MANP), Maine Association for Community Service Providers, and the United Way. The treatment team consists of counselors, nurses, case managers, and peer support specialists.


The Lewiston location is a street-level complex with convenient on-site parking. The facility operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


At the time of this writing, the one former client polled by offered mixed opinions about Tri-County Mental Health Services. Positively, the anonymous alum awarded perfect five stars for overall treatment effectiveness and family participation; four out of five stars for counseling options; and three stars for affordability and facility cleanliness and upkeep. However, they gave two stars for discharge policies, holistic offerings, staff experience and training, and treatment for co-occurring disorders, as well as one star for the likelihood they'd recommend the facility.

In secondary site coverage to date, the facility received moderately positive coverage on Facebook: 3.6 out of five stars based on 11 reviews. [1] Although eight of the total reviewers rated the center perfect five and four out of five stars, most did not leave commentary to support their opinions. The same lack of commentary applied to the three one-star reviewers, except for one, who complained about the facility’s lack of organization and inability to schedule appointments.


Current and former employees of Tri-County Mental Health Services in Lewiston presented moderately favorable feedback on secondary sites to date: 3.8 out of five stars based on eight reviews on Indeed; 3.7 stars based on three reviews on Indeed for the organization as a whole; and four stars based on one review on Facebook from an individual identified as a staff member. Positive reviewers praised their dedicated colleagues, who cared about clients, as well as the supportive administration and atmosphere. An anonymous five-star reviewer on Glassdoor wrote about the steps the facility had taken in recent years to adopt a best evidence-based model: “Tri County Mental Health has transformed into the premier Behavioral Health organization in the country.” Conversely, negative comments concerned lack of communication and resources, micromanagement, and need for more quality staff.
