Trinitas Regional Medical Center is a full-service, 554-bed Catholic teaching hospital that’s spread across two separate campuses in Elizabeth, N.J., just south of Newark. One of just 22 hospital-based treatment programs throughout the state, Trinitas Regional Medical Center operates a department of behavioral health and psychiatry, from which it runs comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for children, adolescents, adults, and entire families.

While the behavioral health department works with court-referred individuals, it offers substance use treatment on an outpatient basis only, albeit at various levels of intensity.

Services provided within the behavioral health department at Trinitas Regional Medical Center are manifold. According to the hospital’s website, patients seeking assistance managing stress and finding alternatives to chemical dependency have access to ambulatory (outpatient) detoxification, partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs, and general outpatient care. Outpatient services are separate for youth and adults.

There's a PHP dedicated to serving women struggling with addiction, five days a week, five hours a day, as well as a residential perinatal addiction program. The hospital offers free child care, making it one of just 23 (6.7 percent of) facilities statewide to do so. Specialized services provided through the behavioral health department address domestic violence, sexual abuse, HIV, developmental disabilities, parenting, and more.

Despite a lack of details for prospective clients on specific treatment modalities, a brochure for prospective doctoral interns of the behavioral health department indicates that the department makes use of dialectical behavior (DBT) and cognitive behavioral (CBT) therapies, psychodynamic therapy, and family therapy.

The behavioral health department employs a multidisciplinary and bilingual staff of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, advanced practice nurses (APNs), arts therapists, substance abuse counselors, and mental health professionals.

Trinitas Regional Medical Center is also one of only 66 (19.2 percent of) facilities in the state with accreditation from the Joint Commission and one of 134 (39.0 percent of) that has license with the New Jersey Department of Health.

The behavioral health inpatient unit can hold up to 95 individuals at a time The single survey respondent to date awarded the hospital four out of five stars for both its accommodations and quality of meals.

While has yet to receive any reviews from the hospital’s alumni, secondary sources demonstrated varying degrees of enthusiasm for the hospital. To date, Trinitas Regional Medical Center has average ratings of 2.4 and 2.0 out of five stars, respectively, based on 165 Google reviews and 29 Yelp reviews.

Those dissatisfied with the treatment they received consistently cited long wait times and a lack of proper patient care: "You are better off driving 30-45 away to a better hospital where you'll probably be seen by a doctor, get treated, drive home, eat something, go to sleep, wake up - and still be done by the time you would've been released from Trinitas," E.F. wrote in a representative review.

Despite these criticisms, many reviewers held the center’s staff in high regard. “Overall, the staff does go out of their way to provide you with care and offer their services. The housekeeping staff, nurse aides, LPNs, RNs, social works, etc go above and beyond in every department, including emergency,” wrote Google reviewer J.C. in one such report.

The single loved one to have completed a survey as of this writing awarded the hospital four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, adding: “Treatment was good."

Trinitas Regional Medical Center is one of 89 (25.9 percent of) facilities in the state of New Jersey that accepts Medicare, one of 209 (60.8 percent of) that accept Medicaid, and one of 222 (64.5 percent of) that accept commercial health insurance.
