ABOUT TURNING POINT, INC. IN PATERSON, NJ

Founded in 1975 and located in Paterson, N.J., Turning Point, Inc. is a private nonprofit facility, which make up about 51 percent of all treatment facilities in New Jersey; it is one of the 46 (13.4 percent) of New Jersey treatment facilities that offers residential treatment services. The treatment center also offers detox to individuals who are struggling with substance abuse. Outpatient treatment is available at other Turning Point facilities, and the organization also operates a halfway house and transitional living facilities in other locations.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Turning Point’s website, the treatment team uses evidence-based treatment methods. To be admitted, clients must complete assessments, registration for a customized treatment plan, and a medical assessment. The facility states that it can admit clients within 24 hours of their initial call, and is able to treat pregnant and postpartum women.

Programming includes individual, group, and family therapy. Clients also participate in motivational enhancement therapy, educational resources, relapse prevention, and 12-step programming.

Families are included in treatment through two programs: The Family Wellness Program and The Family Education & Visitation Program. The Family Wellness Program offers support group meetings as well as individual and family therapy at the organization’s Verona location. The Family Education & Visitation Program is required for family members who would like to visit their loved ones while they complete treatment and includes education about the disease of addiction.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Turning Point includes several master's level licensed and credentialed addiction treatment professionals. The six people polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave mixed feedback for staffers.

Staff’s level of experience and training: 3.7/5 stars

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Turning Point’s website notes the facility underwent extensive renovations in 2010. The modern, hospital-like facility features a classroom, outdoor patio, and private rooms featuring double beds.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The eight alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave mixed feedback for Turning Point. Three alumni gave positive opinions, and indicated that treatment was helpful and effective. "Turning Point helped me get better," one alum wrote with five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and indicating they would recommend the facility.

Three other alumni provided negative feedback for the facility, and noted weaknesses such as the food, lack of time outdoors, and that the staff didn't care. The alumni also indicated they didn't recommend the center.

The two other alumni provided neutral opinions such as noting the center was helpful with addiction, but not co-occurring disorders. The other called the center affordable and noted the caring staff, but didn't find the program helpful.

To date, the 12 people to leave reviews on Turning Point's Facebook page, which it has the ability to manage, gave an average of three out of five stars, and mixed feedback. Some negative feedback includes horrible counselors and being turned away from the center. [1] However, others wrote about how effective treatment is, and how they're now sober.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The five loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date provided mostly positive feedback for Turning Point. The loved ones noted the center's affordability and staff's experience as strengths.

However, loved ones generally didn't agree that there were many counseling options or that the center can properly treat co-occurring disorders. “If they promote themselves as a dual diagnosis program, they need to address this during treatment for their clients,” a loved one wrote in a representative review.

Two loved ones said they felt facility staff were experienced and well-trained. When asked about strengths of Turning Point, one reviewer noted their loved one is still sober a year later, and another wrote: “they worked with our financial situation.” Weaknesses of Turning Point mentioned were that check-in and check-out took too long and family communication was lacking.

FINANCING

There is currently no information provided by Turning Point regarding its costs. However, the facility is one of the 222 (64.5 percent) of New Jersey treatment centers that accepts insurance such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Magellan, Magnacare, Qualcare, and UBH/Oxford.

The center also accepts Medicaid for some treatment programs, but it doesn't cover detox or residential services. Turning Point offers a sliding fee scale, and some clients receive state and county funding depending on income eligibility and residence.

I am clean and sober for over 17 years now. I am now a college graduate for social science and I am trying to become an addiction's counselor.

Turning Point is the worst program to go to. They sit you in front of a television with help motivated movies....Also the director of the facilitation is the most fake person out there... Highly recommend not going there!

This is the WORST facility I\'ve ever been to. The food is like SLOP. The bunk beds are hard and smell disgusting. They \"write you up\" for the dumbest things and if you AMA or get kicked out then they put you on the steps outside with your stuff in a clear bag and let you figure it out ( very degrading) . The counselors look down on you because we\'re addicts and they act very snobby towards the patients. They try to send everyone to a 6-12 month long term program after their short term program & will use your legal stuff against you. The patients steal and the staff won\'t even look at the cameras to help you find out what happened. The staff also play favorites. It was BY FAR the WORST FACILITY IVE EVER BEEN TO. I would not recommend this to my worst enemy. you couldn\'t pay me enough to go back.

The only thing this place is good for is to physically detox yourself. The food is horrible and you only see the outside 4 times a day for 15 minutes at a time. The counsellors didn\'t seem to care about each individual patient. They all seemed like they had too much work to be sincere to each person. They also don\'t clean very much and the beds are worse than hospital beds. If you are only looking to get off the drugs then go here. If you want to learn how to live your life after the drugs as well go somewhere else!

Nephew is still sober after 1 year. Wait for check out and check in was too long and nobody could tell how long it was going to take while we waited. Staff seemed nice enough, personally, to those of us bring someone in but efficiency was not a strong point in that no one kept us informed as to how long check in/out would take.

Is average in my opinion. Based in my observation. This is going back 8 plus years ago. Things might have changed Things involving family and communication with the family. Keeping the family aware of progress pr lack of. I feel is important
