Located in Togus, Maine, just five miles east of Augusta, the VA Maine Healthcare System is a 67-bed facility with surgical, medical, and mental health beds. The VA Maine Healthcare System prides itself as being the oldest Veteran’s facility in the country. The Togus VAMC facility in Augusta offers outpatient and mental health programs for veterans seeking treatment for addiction and service-related conditions. It is one of seven (3.5 percent) of facilities in Maine that offer partial hospitalization (PHP). Detox is not available.


The mental health conditions treated at Togus VAMC include addictive and aggressive behaviors, memory loss, anxiety and depression, emotion management. It is one of the 125 (37.1 percent) of facilities in Maine that offer treatment for clients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

To help clients succeed outside of treatment, the facility also offers vocational assistance. There are only 43 (21.6 percent) of facilities in Maine that offer any form of job training or assistance. The center also runs a support group for friends and families of vets living with mental illness on the second Wednesday of the month.

For senior veterans in need of nursing home level care, Togus VAMC provides a safe and home-like environment under its Community Living Center (CLC) The stated goal of the CLC is to “restore function, prevent decline, maximize independence, and provide comfort when dying.” Home-based primary care and extended care services are also available.


The Chief of Staff at the VA Maine Healthcare System is a medical doctor who recently served as the State Epidemiologist for the state of Maine. The VA Maine Healthcare System is one of the 11 (5.5 percent) of facilities in Maine that are accredited by the Joint Commission.


Togus VAMC has 67-beds for mental health and substance abuse treatment. The facility also has a residential wing that houses a 100-bed nursing home. Clients have access to case management and medical personnel at all times in a semi-clinical facility. The facility is one of the 11 (5.5 percent) of facilities in Maine accredited by The Joint Commission.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s alumni. However, the VA center has an average rating of 4.4 stars out of five from 48 Google reviewers.[1] The reviews are about the VA as a whole, not the behavioral health department. “I have had very good care and find providers are VERY responsive,” wrote Katrine in a representative review.

On Facebook, where the facility can manage its own page, the VA Main Healthcare System has an average of 4.1 out of five stars based on the feedback from 91 people to date.[2] Although one reviewer indicated that staff didn’t order the prescriptions he needed, alumni generally provided positive feedback about the staff. Keith wrote how the staff was “Professional, personal, and funny.”


In the sole survey response for to date, an anonymous loved one gave the VA center four out of five star ratings for 14 out of 15 areas of treatment including family participation, the staff’s level of training and experience, the treatment for co-occurring disorders, and the counseling options available. “Help loved ones,” they commented.


The VA accepts private health insurance. Medicare can be billed in specific circumstances. Also, the VA is the only organization in Maine (0.5 percent) that offers treatment at no cost to veterans with veteran’s benefits.
