ABOUT VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA – FREEDOM HOUSE WOMEN’S ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAM
Since 1896, Volunteers of America has been serving veterans, the homeless, those with developmental disorders, and more through ministry-based treatment. The organization hosts 37 rehab centers across Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Southern Indiana, and Southern Ohio. Freedom House, located in Louisville, Ky., offers residential treatment to pregnant and postpartum women who are struggling with substance abuse disorders, along with their children. This is one of the state's only 102 (28.4 percent) programs with this service for women. Detox services are not available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
As a whole network, Volunteers of America says that their “religious beliefs and practices can be traced in a direct line to the Methodist reforms and revivalism of the 18th century, and the social gospel movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries.” First and foremost, treatment at Freedom House is also evidence-based, using holistic and family-centered therapies.
Family, group, and individual therapy aid clients’ recovery, and topics include education about addition, life skills, and nutrition. The program also offers employment services and vocational training to help clients plan for their futures. Family involvement is encouraged in the recovery process. Treatment for the children of program participants is also available on an as needed basis.
Education is a major component of treatment. The program offers a range of educational courses that focus on common stressors that contribute to a client’s substance abuse. These topics include parenting skills, sober living and coping skills, health and wellness training, and job training.
Volunteers of America employs about 700 professional staff members and 1,400 volunteers throughout its network. There are no details given on the facility’s website about specific Freedom House staff. However, the single individual polled to date on the staff’s level of training and experience at Freedom House gave five out of five stars.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
While details about accommodations are limited, the Freedom House Women’s Addiction Recovery Program has a capacity of 20 women. A single survey respondent gave five out of five stars for meals and nutrition, but just three out of five stars for accommodations and amenities.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing, two alumni provided mixed reviews to Rehabs.com. One former client gave five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, while the other gave three out of five stars. Former client R.M. wrote, “Close bonds with other clients” when surveyed on facility strengths; however, was displeased with “Poor management.”
The other former client, R.B., strongly agreed that he would recommend this facility to others, and provided five out of five stars for counseling options, and four stars for family inclusion. "Staff have strong compassion for helping people/clients. Very organized daily routine, clean center," he praised.
On Google, the facility earned 3.8 out of five stars from 16 reviewers. While one alum, C.C., commented that the non-clinical staff was “rude and uneducated,” two alumni praised the facility’s focus on saving lives and pregnant women.
Few details are provided about the cost of treatment, but Freedom House Women’s Addiction Recovery Program website states that the program is partly funded by donations from various organizations.
