ABOUT VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA TEXAS

Volunteers of America (VOA) Texas is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that has provided low-cost treatment since 1917 across Texas and New Mexico to populations at risk, including men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. In Texas,193 (44.8 percent) of treatment centers offer programming for co-occurring disorders.

The McGovern Campus in Houston, one of over 30 of the organization's locations, offers residential and outpatient treatment. The facility is also among the 108 (25.1 percent) centers in Texas with services for pregnant and postpartum women. VOA Texas in Houston also provides affordable housing services for low-income families, the elderly, and individuals with developmental disabilities.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at VOA Texas in Houston focuses on addressing not merely addiction, but also issues that may arise because of it, such as poverty, homelessness, and abuse. Programming consists of individual, group, and family counseling, financial support services, parenting classes, and job preparation programs. Classes in 12-step principles, as well as attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, also are part of the treatment curriculum.

According to its website, the organization’s Houston addiction center offers two residential treatment programs. One is a short-term program, lasting for 30 days or less; the other residential program is long-term, lasting for more than 30 days. VOA Texas's outpatient treatment and recovery programs in Houston are held in two locations. Medication management to address any co-occurring mental health disorders may be available to both residential and outpatient-based clients.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is limited information provided on the facility's website regarding its treatment staff, though alumni had mixed opinions of the staff. One anonymous reviewer praised the contributions and support from staff, while another rated staff experience and training two out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is limited information available on the VOA Texas website regarding the Houston living arrangements and amenities. The six individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave accommodations and amenities an average rating of three out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni of VOA Texas at Houston reported drastically different experiences and, overall, responses are mixed. One anonymous reviewer, who rated treatment effectiveness with a perfect five stars, wrote: “It is a basic no nonsense program that forces you to take responsibility for your actions, they provide excellent individual, group and family counseling. very structured program, lots of AA/NA/CA meetings both on and off site.” Another, who rated treatment effectiveness with four out of five stars, commented, “It worked for me. I am still clean to this day!”

However, alumni shared particularly split opinions regarding the staff’s level of training and experience and the quality of individual and group counseling. An anonymous alum praised the counselors, but criticized other staffers: “Great counselors. Staff are rude to those needing their medications.” Another wrote: “I would recommend because truth be told you are never going to want to come back to this place ever again and so you will probably do the work it takes to stay sober.”

On Google at the time of this writing, 33 reviewers produced a 3.3 out of five-star average rating for this facility overall.[1] Few reviewers left written feedback, though D.M. commented, "It's very organized and the counselors care about people," while A.E. simply added, "Better than prison."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided negative feedback. Patricia reported her full disappointment to Rehabs.com regarding the treatment her child received. “It was constant drama and constant hard core rules and constant punishments little food,” she wrote. Patricia summed it up with a warning, commenting, “Please never consider VOA in houston for treatment.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole staffer surveyed by Rehabs.com to date provided a somewhat mixed review of the facility. Though noting a high-staff turnover rate, this employee noted that "the counselors and nurse care and are experienced." They provided five stars for the center's affordability, but only three stars for whether they would recommend this program to others. Low, two-star ratings were provided for counseling options, exercise activities, and admissions and discharge procedures.

FINANCING

According to the facility's website, VOA Texas in Houston accepts Medicaid and Access to Recovery vouchers. Payment assistance may be available. Apart from this information, there is currently no further details available on pricing. In a review submitted to Rehabs.com, alum P.M. wrote that the state paid for their outpatient treatment.

They kept people from AA and Na locked out as punishment for community. There was little enough outside help and I can see why now.

it is a basic no nonsense program that forces you to take responsibility for your actions, they provide excellent individual, group and family counseling. very structured program, lots of AA/NA/CA meetings both on and off site. I just cant tell you how may times I was in some fancy country club rehab when i did have insurance and they were nothing compared to this place. it is a community based setting, everyone is held accountable to everyone else...alot of peer support as well as staff support. I celebrated my first ever birthday sober (since my addiction began 27 years ago) while I was there, and I could not have been happier!! this facility truly helped me change my life for the better, and had I not stopped using, I would definitely NOT be alive today!!!
