ABOUT WELLSTONE REGIONAL HOSPITAL
Wellstone Regional Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Jeffersonville, Ind., offering a wide range of residential and outpatient services for both psychiatric and substance abuse disorders to children, adolescents, adults, and senior clients. The hospital also offers specialized therapies including art, music, and horticultural therapy for all clients. For adults (ages 18 and over) the hospital offers a series of outpatient “Living Well” programs for those with severe and persistent psychiatric illness (limited to Medicare clients only). Detoxification and aftercare services are also available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Wellstone Regional Hospital is one of Indiana’s 21 (6.9 percent) hospitals that offer substance abuse treatment. It follows a 12-step based therapy approach that utilizes “physical, social, spiritual, medical, and psychotherapeutic treatment interventions.” All residential programs are designed to be short-term and highly structured, aimed at targeting symptoms of the behavioral health issue, developing coping skills, and designing an aftercare plan.
Substance abuse is treated using a holistic method. Clients are enrolled in residential or outpatient programs that focus on reducing the use of drugs and facilitating the development of coping skills. Suboxone maintenance is available as needed. Suboxone used in the medication assisted treatment (MAT) program reduces the impact of withdrawal symptoms. 7,433 (1.8 percent) clients completed MAT programs in Indiana in 2017.
In addition to substance abuse, clients often seek treatment for mental health conditions. Wellstone is able to treat a range of conditions including anger management, stress, anxiety, and panic attacks. Clients enrolled in the substance abuse program are also evaluated for any co-occurring mental health disorders.
Other treatment programs include individual, group, and family therapy, along with education groups. Specialized programs are available for different age groups. Programs for children and adolescents include “hygiene time,” school time, family meetings, recreation, and “quiet time.” The children's program is called BEARS (behavior, emotions, anger management, respect and self-esteem). This program offers six or more educational group therapy sessions with a daily theme for better retention.
For seniors, treatment focuses on maintaining functionality while addressing common issues that come with aging. Treatment includes counseling combined with recreational therapy, special education for family and caregivers, medication management, and facilitating placement after leaving the program.
The treatment team at Wellstone Regional Hospital staff includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and master's level therapists, including an art therapist and a recreation therapist. There are certified teachers, a pharmacist, a phlebotomist, a certified horticulturist, a certified pet therapist, and chiropractors. The support staff includes mental health technicians and clinicians.
