Wellstone Regional Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Jeffersonville, Ind., offering a wide range of residential and outpatient services for both psychiatric and substance abuse disorders to children, adolescents, adults, and senior clients. The hospital also offers specialized therapies including art, music, and horticultural therapy for all clients. For adults (ages 18 and over) the hospital offers a series of outpatient “Living Well” programs for those with severe and persistent psychiatric illness (limited to Medicare clients only). Detoxification and aftercare services are also available.

Wellstone Regional Hospital is one of Indiana’s 21 (6.9 percent) hospitals that offer substance abuse treatment. It follows a 12-step based therapy approach that utilizes “physical, social, spiritual, medical, and psychotherapeutic treatment interventions.” All residential programs are designed to be short-term and highly structured, aimed at targeting symptoms of the behavioral health issue, developing coping skills, and designing an aftercare plan.

Substance abuse is treated using a holistic method. Clients are enrolled in residential or outpatient programs that focus on reducing the use of drugs and facilitating the development of coping skills. Suboxone maintenance is available as needed. Suboxone used in the medication assisted treatment (MAT) program reduces the impact of withdrawal symptoms. 7,433 (1.8 percent) clients completed MAT programs in Indiana in 2017.

In addition to substance abuse, clients often seek treatment for mental health conditions. Wellstone is able to treat a range of conditions including anger management, stress, anxiety, and panic attacks. Clients enrolled in the substance abuse program are also evaluated for any co-occurring mental health disorders.

Other treatment programs include individual, group, and family therapy, along with education groups. Specialized programs are available for different age groups. Programs for children and adolescents include “hygiene time,” school time, family meetings, recreation, and “quiet time.” The children's program is called BEARS (behavior, emotions, anger management, respect and self-esteem). This program offers six or more educational group therapy sessions with a daily theme for better retention.

For seniors, treatment focuses on maintaining functionality while addressing common issues that come with aging. Treatment includes counseling combined with recreational therapy, special education for family and caregivers, medication management, and facilitating placement after leaving the program.

The treatment team at Wellstone Regional Hospital staff includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and master's level therapists, including an art therapist and a recreation therapist. There are certified teachers, a pharmacist, a phlebotomist, a certified horticulturist, a certified pet therapist, and chiropractors. The support staff includes mental health technicians and clinicians.

The hospital accommodates up to 100 clients at a time. The accommodations are clinical throughout the facility with access to medical staff members and facilities at all times. The treatment area also includes classrooms and therapy rooms with a more relaxed feel to help clients focus on their treatment. Pharmacy and medication management services are readily available. The six individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave average ratings of 4.3 out of five stars for the facility’s accommodations and 4.5 out of five stars for its cleanliness.

At the time of this writing, five alumni of Wellstone Regional Hospital were polled by Rehabs.com. The feedback was mostly positive.

Alumni had mixed feelings about staff. Two alumni praised staff with one calling them "kind, caring, and understanding.” One alum wrote: “Many of the counselors were also recovering addicts who spoke openly which was very encouraging,” while one alum "They don't care."

Another alum thought a strength of the program was the “location" and "experience” while yet another did not think the facility had any strengths.

Regarding weaknesses of the facility, Diane wrote: “I would have preferred to be given options other than a twelve step program for my recovery.” An anonymous alum wrote,:“They need to change everything.”

This facility treated my son with respect and he got the help he needed. However, they only take cash or certain insurance coverage. He can't go there now that he has different insurance. It is a nice facility with clean appearance. The participants were kept busy and were engaged with their treatment process. At the time my son went there, the funding was very limited. He had good insurance at the time, but a lot of people there had to pay cash. That would prohibit who could be treated.

Doctors are available and staff is adequate. Treatment duration is far too short. Patient release is often premature.

Many of the counselors were also recovering addicts who spoke openly which was very encouraging. All in all staff was kind, caring, and understanding. However, I would have preferred to be given options other than a twelve step program for my recovery.
