ABOUT WESTCARE CALIFORNIA
WestCare California provides individuals a broad spectrum of substance misuse and mental health treatment programs at over 20 locations throughout the state. WestCare's Martin Luther King Campus in Fresno, Calif., offers residential and outpatient treatment to adult men and women. This facility also offers case management, day reporting, and sober living.
WestCare California operates several other facilities in Fresno which provide additional services such as adolescent-specific programming. WestCare California is part of the WestCare Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates hundreds of rehab facilities across the United States.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Adult inpatient programming is gender-specific and uses a 12-step approach that incorporates individual and group counseling, education, job training, mental health treatment, and family services. The short-term residential program lasts up to 31 days, while the long-term program can last as long as to 180 days. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 24.7 percent of residential treatment facilities in California offer programs shorter than 30 days and 33.6 percent offer programs longer than 30 days.
WestCare also offers the STOP Area 3 treatment program, which is one of California's 523 (39.9 percent) specialized programs for criminal justice clients. The Supportive Overnight Stay Program (SOS) provides a safe environment to spend the night for individuals who arrive at an ER with a mental health conditions that don't require a legal hold, as WestCare's website indicates.

One anonymous loved one wrote in a representative review: "This facility gives the client the opportunity to become clean and sober and be a productive member of society... Not enough recreational opportunities: more exercise equipment is needed, more avenues for the clients to get involved in positive activities such as tending a garden, yoga, meditation, etc. are needed in this facility."
WHAT STAFF SAY
The two former staff members polled by Rehabs.com to date gave highly polarized feedback. The first anonymous staff member gave the facility four- or five-star ratings to most categories evaluated, including counseling options, treatment co-occurring mental health conditions, and the staff's experience and training.
The other reviewer, K.W., gave the facility only one or two stars to most categories evaluated. K.W. wrote: “no ongoing training for employees, employees dating patients, classes are not structured.”
The cost of treatment is not published on WestCare's website. According to HealthGrove, WestCare accepts state insurance (other than Medicaid), military insurance, and Access to Recovery (ATR) Vouchers.
In an effort to combat staffing shortages, WestCare has been incorporating new methods to obtain and maintain qualified employees. As stated in an article by Provider Magazine, "This includes allowing more flexibility in worker scheduling, taking a more collaborative “coaching” approach to managing staff, boosting wages when able or offering more incentives, and relaxing facility rules."
