ABOUT WESTCARE CALIFORNIA

WestCare California provides individuals a broad spectrum of substance misuse and mental health treatment programs at over 20 locations throughout the state. WestCare's Martin Luther King Campus in Fresno, Calif., offers residential and outpatient treatment to adult men and women. This facility also offers case management, day reporting, and sober living.

WestCare California operates several other facilities in Fresno which provide additional services such as adolescent-specific programming. WestCare California is part of the WestCare Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates hundreds of rehab facilities across the United States.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Adult inpatient programming is gender-specific and uses a 12-step approach that incorporates individual and group counseling, education, job training, mental health treatment, and family services. The short-term residential program lasts up to 31 days, while the long-term program can last as long as to 180 days. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 24.7 percent of residential treatment facilities in California offer programs shorter than 30 days and 33.6 percent offer programs longer than 30 days.

Outpatient treatment include an intensive outpatient program (IOP) option. Additionally, WestCare is among the 24.3 percent of treatment facilities in California to offer a program for veterans.

WestCare also offers the STOP Area 3 treatment program, which is one of California's 523 (39.9 percent) specialized programs for criminal justice clients. The Supportive Overnight Stay Program (SOS) provides a safe environment to spend the night for individuals who arrive at an ER with a mental health conditions that don't require a legal hold, as WestCare's website indicates.

Facility Cleanliness and Upkeep: 4/5
Exercise and Leisure Activities: 3.4/5

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The nine alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date mostly reported overall positive experiences. Many alumni cited as strengths a structured environment that provides a good foundation for recovery, a caring staff, and good food. Most indicated that the their treatment was highly effective overall. However, several alumni noted that the facility is understaffed, and many also criticized the holistic offerings and counseling options.

Counseling Options: 3.5/5
Holistic Offerings: 2.8/5

In a representative review, alum Chris wrote: "I was at westcare for treatment two times, I got what I wanted and needed both times. I was able to learn about myself and feelings and was able to reestablish a daily routine of living which I desperately needed and was able to take that with me."

On Google, 21 individuals mostly offered positive feedback and contributed to an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars.[1] Like those surveyed by Rehabs.com, many alumni on Google praised the staff as caring and, as alum Shawna put it, "down to earth and trustworthy." Respondents on WestCare California's Facebook page, which staff can manage, were similarly positive, with an overall rating of 4.4 out of five stars based on 22 reviews.[2] In most instances, however, it was not clear which of WestCare California's many locations was being reviewed.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Four loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed reviews that skewed positive. Several reviewers cited the experience and kindness of counselors as a strength. Another loved one added that they allow clients to “phase up” to find employment or go to school. Still others cited the ability for family to participate in treatment as a strength.

Staff Experience and Training: 4.8/5
Family Participation: 4.5/5
Connectivity and Visitor Policy: 4.5/5

However, respondents generally felt that the facility could improve upon the exercise equipment and recreational opportunities offered to clients as well its holistic offerings.

Holistic Offerings: 2.3/5

One anonymous loved one wrote in a representative review: "This facility gives the client the opportunity to become clean and sober and be a productive member of society... Not enough recreational opportunities: more exercise equipment is needed, more avenues for the clients to get involved in positive activities such as tending a garden, yoga, meditation, etc. are needed in this facility."

WHAT STAFF SAY

The two former staff members polled by Rehabs.com to date gave highly polarized feedback. The first anonymous staff member gave the facility four- or five-star ratings to most categories evaluated, including counseling options, treatment co-occurring mental health conditions, and the staff's experience and training.

The other reviewer, K.W., gave the facility only one or two stars to most categories evaluated. K.W. wrote: “no ongoing training for employees, employees dating patients, classes are not structured.”

FINANCING

The cost of treatment is not published on WestCare's website. According to HealthGrove, WestCare accepts state insurance (other than Medicaid), military insurance, and Access to Recovery (ATR) Vouchers.

Affordability: 4/5

CONCLUSION

In an effort to combat staffing shortages, WestCare has been incorporating new methods to obtain and maintain qualified employees. As stated in an article by Provider Magazine, "This includes allowing more flexibility in worker scheduling, taking a more collaborative “coaching” approach to managing staff, boosting wages when able or offering more incentives, and relaxing facility rules."

Experienced counselors, Co-occurring counselors, this facility gives the client the opportunity to become clean and sober and be a productive member of society. This facility also allows clients who have phased up to find employment and/or schooling opportunities. Not enough recreational opportunities: more exercise equipment is needed, more avenues for the clients to get involved in positive activities such as tending a garden, yoga, meditation, etc. are needed in this facility. A loved one completed this program. This program offers the client to become involved in responsible duties while in treatment: such as an opportunity to become house manager. This facility offers excellent client/counselor groups as well as family groups. This facility houses men and women (no contact policy). This facility accepts mothers with children or fathers with children.

Structured. Not enough education clients have to clean all the time. I was at westcare for treatment two times, I got what I wanted and needed both times. I was able to learn about myself and feelings and was able to reestablish a daily routine of living which I desperately needed and was able to take that with me. I also made some sober connections and now have people I can call when I need to .
