ABOUT WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN DORN VETERANS AFFAIRS MEDICAL CENTER

Located in Columbia, S.C., the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center offers a variety of outpatient treatment options for veterans struggling with mental health problems, substance use disorder, or a dual diagnosis. In addition to a dedicated Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP) and a mental health clinic offering support services, the facility also provides ambulatory detox. It's one of only 11 outpatient treatment facilities in South Carolina (just 10 percent) to provide medical detox. It's also one of only 10 facilities in the state to offer treatment tailored to vets.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Veterans may choose from a number of services offered by the SATP, including addiction education, couples and family counseling, and skills building courses. CiteHealth reports that the program also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) utilizing buprenorphine for clients battling opioid dependency. In 2017, 21 percent of South Carolina treatment facilities utilized buprenorphine for MAT.

Mental health services can be integrated with clients' primary care plans, or addressed at the General Mental Health Outpatient Clinic, which offers both short and long-term programs. Common problems that are treated include chronic depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Treatment services include medication management, one-on-one counseling, group therapy, skill building classes, and psychoeducational classes.
