ABOUT WINTER HAVEN CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

The Center for Behavioral Health (CBH) of Winter Haven Hospital, a 458-bed facility founded nearly 100 years ago in 1926, provides outpatient therapy and psychiatric services for individuals of all ages. The CBH also specializes in helping students, from pre-school age through high school, and families.

Located in Winter Haven, Fla., roughly halfway between Tampa and Orlando, the established hospital is one of 203 (30.4 percent) of facilities statewide that’s accredited by the Joint Commission.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Center for Behavioral Health at Winter Haven Hospital has over 40 years’ experience behind its outpatient therapy, support, and psychiatric services.

Depending on their needs, individuals can receive individual, group, and family therapy and/or case management for any behavioral health, medical, housing, and other needs. Those able to are encouraged to attend psychoeducational groups, parenting programs, and free presentations, and, where needed, clients work closely with advance practice nurse practice nurse practitioners (APRN) for psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic services and medication management.

The CBH also provides assistance and stability for families - through its Helping Families Succeed (HFS) and Specialized Community Care Team (SCCT) programs - and offers school-based counseling and consultations for children and teens, from pre-school age through high school, who are struggling with emotional and behavioral health issues.

The outpatient program at Winter Haven Hospital is one of just 371 (55.5 percent) of centers statewide that makes use of peer support. Participants of the peer recovery program benefit from a curriculum of education, employment skills, and socialization, twice weekly.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Services at the behavioral health unit at Winter Haven Hospital are provided and overseen by a licensed and board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, advance practice nurse practitioners (APRN), and a master’s level, licensed mental health counselor (LMHC).

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from patients of the Center for Behavioral Health, several of the 23 Google reviewers to date voiced their frustration with the hospital’s no-schedule policy.[1]

“This place is a disgrace,” wrote T.W. in a one-star, representative statement. “They are a perfect example of why mentally ill people fall through the cracks and end up hurting themselves or others. They have open access which means you can get seen by a social worker. You can’t schedule appointments in a timely manner and they can’t see you on a regular basis. A family member was trying to get help and this placed failed them on all levels.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Though they also found flaw in the hospital’s wait time, the single respondent of a Rehabs.com survey to date, a family member, applauded the school-based services and free classes. “Great advise and truthful,” the anonymous reviewer commented.

FINANCING

The Center for Behavioral Health is one of just 463 (69.3 percent) of Florida treatment centers that accept most major health insurance plans. It is one of 154 (23.1 percent) of centers statewide to accept Medicare, and part of the 38 percent to accept Medicaid.

The CBH also offers sliding scale fees for those who meet state criteria.
