Zumbro Valley Health Center in Rochester, Minn. is a nonprofit organization that's been dedicated to serving families and individuals with mental health disorders and challenges in southeast Minnesota for more than 50 years. One of 151 (42.4 percent) private nonprofit facilities across the state, Zumbro Valley provides psychiatric and primary health care, short and long-term substance abuse treatment programs for adults and teens, and specialized services for homeless individuals and those with traumatic brain injury, developmental disabilities, and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Drug and hair testing, DWI classes, monitored sobriety, and 24-hour detox services are also available to residents of 12 counties in southeast Minnesota. Zumbra Valley is one of 72 (about 20 percent) facilities in the state to offers services for DUI or DWI clients.

Clients still under the influence typically begin the treatment process with a short-term detoxification in the 22-bed Connections & Referral unit. This three-day period affords clients the opportunity to detox from alcohol or drugs and receive counseling on addiction and education on ways to prevent relapse. There’s also an intervention program that involves monthly classes for those concerned over their substance abuse habits but not in need of detox.

Following detox, clients are often recommended to attend one of Zumbro Valley’s five unique outpatient recovery programs. All treatment programs at Zumbro Valley Health Center are based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s Six Dimensions of substance abuse treatment. Staff and clients work together to develop an individualized treatment plan that’s built upon evidence-based practices.

At the most introductory level of care, Recovery Basics is a traditional substance abuse program that focuses on the physical effect of chemicals, the development of new thinking patterns and support systems, and long-term independent and sober living skills.

Next, Pacing Recovery Effectively is a 15-week program exclusively designed for adults with both chemical dependency and cognitive impairment issues. This unique track for co-occurring disorders sees collaboration amongst a variety of organizations and makes use of visual and auditory aids.

Zumbro Valley’s intensive outpatient program (IOP), titled Recovery Partners, offers crisis planning and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for dually diagnosed adults who are seeking to improve their problem solving and social skills. Here, men and women have opportunity to discuss challenges and issues that are specific to each of them.

Another option, the Right to Recovery, is a 12-month program designed exclusively for adults who’ve had prior treatment experience and are looking for extra support. The long-term program runs five days a week and makes use of educational presentations, one-on-one sessions, and recreational activity.

For individuals who are both homeless and have a chronic substance abuse disorder, the Outreach and Continued Care program provides hope through referrals, assistance in locating housing, vocational training, and more.

All six members of the Chemical Health Services Staff are licensed alcohol and drug counselors with the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.

In the Right to Recovery program, counselors collaborate with a physician, nursing staff, and the client’s probation officer throughout the year-long program.

Zumbro Valley can accommodate up to 22 individuals in its Connections & Referral Unit and an additional 12 adults on an inpatient basis. Few further details are not available, however, the single Rehabs.com survey respondent to date shared four-star ratings for both the center’s accommodations and meals.
