Clinical Program Manager/Primary Therapist Recovery Institute of Ohio

My name is Jessica Kitchin and I am currently the Clinical Program Manager/Primary Therapist at Recovery Institute of Ohio. In August of 2018, I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Obtaining these degrees and progressing in my life was always part of my plan as a child; however, when I started drinking regularly by the age of 12 and using drugs at the age of 16, I didn’t think my life was going to end up the way it has. Even though I attended college for education, I found myself drinking and heavily using drugs, until I dropped out with one semester left. My addiction completely controlled my life.

Locate Blacksburg Treatment Centers
Blacksburg, Virginia is home to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It has the largest student body of any institution of higher learning in the state. One organization located on the university campus is the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention; the mission of the organization is to “decrease the negative consequences associated with hazardous drinking and illegal drug use among college students.”

Tragedies involving college drinking and hazing incidents involving alcohol have been in the news in recent years. Not all young adults who experiment with alcohol in college become alcoholics or addicts, but approximately 20 percent do wind up becoming “persistent drinkers” in later adulthood.

It is never too late to seek help from an alcohol treatment center in Blacksburg, however.

Binge Drinking

About 40 percent of college students engage in a behavior known as “binge drinking,” which is defined as “heavy, episodic drinking.” During a “binge,” a person may consume between four and five drinks in rapid succession. One of the dangers of binge drinking is alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal.Items to Take to a Treatment Center

If you enroll in a residential treatment program, you will need to determine what to bring with you. Most treatment facilities have this information available on their websites. You should be aware that there are also things that you are not allowed to bring. Again, this varies from one program to another, but generally include:

  • Personal electronic devices (laptops, tablet PCs, cell phones, etc.)
  • Medicines or other products containing alcohol (including cologne and mouthwash)
  • Provocative or revealing clothing
  • Inappropriate reading material

Locate Rehabilitation Options in Blacksburg

The first step to recovery is to admit that you have a substance abuse problem. The second step is to locate a suitable treatment program in or near Blacksburg.
