Had my own bathroom and kitchen, you cook your own meals, shop for your food, although building is ran down, bed was comfortable. They made every possible effort to provide services that I needed.

Letty Owings Center

I think the treatment is pretty effective. The program is for women and children, reuniting moms with their children who are in foster care or unborn. A lot of parenting skills are emphasized and a lot of families are reunited. We allow mothers to have their children in treatment with them. This is especially important for pregnant women with a history of using. Their baby would be removed at birth in most cases. By coming into treatment prior to giving birth, most of our babies are born drug free. The mother can return to the facility with her child and the support of our staff. We have an onsite pediatric nurse and a licensed nursery. We encourage breast feeding and bonding. Most of these women do not have a clue about being a mother and are eager to learn. Due to budget constraints we are unable to offer many "extra" curricular activities for the women. We do have yoga and acupuncture but there are so many cultural events that happen in our city that it would be awesome to expose these women to but this is beyond our budget.

What You Need to Ask Before Going to a Rehab

The college years can be an exhilarating time, but this period can also be extremely stressful. The demands of academic life and the need to fit in socially can take an emotional toll. At the same time, alcohol and drugs are often readily available, providing a convenient release. In addition, many people experience the first symptoms of mental illness in their late teens or early 20s.

Before you enter a Davis treatment center, ask about the facility's treatment options, the cost of services and whether it offers a multi-disciplinary approach to recovery. Students who need treatment for depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder will require psychotherapy as well as substance abuse counseling.

How Can College Students Party Safely?

UC Davis has developed a list of "safe party" tips for students who choose to drink recreationally. These tips include:</p>

  • Choosing a designated driver before you party
  • Setting a limit of one to three drinks and keep yourself accountable to a friend
  • Alternate alcoholic beverages with water
  • Slow down your body's absorption of alcohol by eating before the party
