Am I a Failure?

Scientists have yet to truly understand addiction, as it is complex and different for each patient. As the National Institute on Drug Abuse reports, addictions are often stigmatized as being a voluntary choice, and those experiencing addiction are sometimes instructed to stop their addiction by willpower alone.

While personal responsibility is very important in addiction treatment, the following statements are also true:
  • With the proper treatment and ongoing care, you can conquer addiction.
  • Addiction is a medical condition, similar to diabetes or any other chronic condition.
  • Ongoing care will help reduce the risk of relapse.
  • Willpower alone will not stop an addict.
