Choosing Recovery
No one thinks about the possibility that they might become a drug addict or alcoholic when they are a young child. Most people have big plans and aspirations for the future, and they often think that they will be happy and healthy while they are pursuing their dreams. What you don’t know as a child is that there are sometimes emotionally traumatic events, losses, failures and accidents that you can’t plan for that will drastically change the way that you look at life. When people lose their ability to cope with these events, it is time to consider the possibility that a Christian rehab center might be able to help them.
Many people become so wrapped up in their own drug and alcohol use that they can’t see that they have lost control of their lives and are hurting the people around them with their selfish behavior. Some people may have lost all their savings and credit because they are so concerned with buying drugs and alcohol every day. Others may have even lost their jobs or their homes because they cease to be able to care about anything but satisfying their chemical cravings. When first faced with the proposition that they might need to attend a Christian rehab center, many addicts will deny that they even have a problem, but over time they can be shown that they are powerless to change their lives without professional help.
At first, many people just assume that a Christian rehab center just isn’t right for them because they wouldn’t describe themselves as practicing Christians. However it is important to note that these programs accept people of all types of backgrounds, and in most cases their spiritual support is very comforting to those that are experiencing the difficult process of getting used to a life without drugs or alcohol.
In many ways, a Christian rehab center is very similar to the secular centers that offer treatment for substance abuse. Both provide the chance for the patient to become fully and safely detoxified from the substance that they are using before they are required to start concentrating on their mental, emotional and spiritual recovery. Then, there is the opportunity to engage in meditation, prayer, and one on one talk therapy that gives the patient to explore the real reasons that they felt compelled to start using the substance in the first place. After the traditional ninety day recovery period, these facilities usually recommend that some period of after care is pursued.
