Townsend Recovery Center, New Orleans Philosophy
Townsend, owned and operated by Avenues Recovery Centers, offers a spectrum of innovative rehabilitation services based on the needs of each patient. The Townsend Recovery Center, located in Scott, LA near Lafayette, is a residential detox and residential treatment facility offering a private addiction recovery atmosphere. Patients are treated with encouragement and respect by blending high quality addiction therapy with compassionate counseling in a safe recovery environment. The core philosophy at Townsend is that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can be managed or put in “remission.” Using The Townsend Way their team strives to help both patients and loved ones heal from their addictions and enjoy an improved quality of life. Once the patient’s acute medical condition has stabilized, The Townsend Way offers a unique, effective, and long-term plan to keep his or her addiction in remission.
Townsend treatment also offers an intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) phase at seven additional facilities, which varies in length according to the patient’s needs. After completing this IOP phase, Townsend provides former patients with continuing care via enrollment in their optional chronic disease management plan to keep their disease in remission.
Areas of Specialization
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.
It has brought my family and me closer, allowing us to do things together without our attention being centered on my using.

ABOUT TOWNSEND RECOVERY CENTER — NEW ORLEANS
Townsend Recovery Center (TRC) in New Orleans is the most recent of eight Louisiana-based Townsend facilities to provide specialized, biosocial treatment to individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Treatment follows a proprietary method called The Townsend Way, which addresses the disease of addiction with genetic and cognitive information. Launched in late 2017, the residential program is part of the 10 percent of Louisiana facilities to offer hospital-based medical detoxification.
Continuing inpatient dual diagnosis treatment is also available at the center, followed by programming at one of seven outpatient Townsend Treatment Centers, including facilities in Houma, New Orleans, Metairie, Lake Charles, Covington, and Lafayette.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the Townsend Recovery Center website, treatment through the Townsend method is designed for individuals who have not yet “hit rock bottom” in their struggle with addiction and substance use.
Following an initial phone screening, clients can receive assistance in arranging travel to the New Orleans facility, where they begin a short-term, intensive detox program. Those in need of continued medical support may remain in inpatient treatment, while others are encouraged to transition to one of the group’s intensive outpatient programs (IOP). Townsend recommends a minimum of 90 days of treatment.
Treatment at TRC is led by a staff physician, who helps to craft individualized plans of care utilizing client results from genetic testing and other biological components. If necessary, clients may receive medication-assisted treatment (Suboxone and Naltrexone). Clients also undergo cognitive testing and participate in both group and individual therapy sessions, typically involving motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). The center touts a "compassionate" approach to counseling.
In keeping with the program’s emphasis on holistic recovery and chronic disease management, residential clients are given instruction and care for physical exercise and nutritional health. Treatment for co-occurring psychiatric conditions follows an in-house, workbook-based program, and clients are encouraged to participate in a 12-step support system. The center also holds weekly family sessions.
Aftercare provisions consist of a weekly continuing care groups and participation in the alumni association, which offers support and networking through events.
The Townsend Recovery Center founder and medical consultant is a board-certified psychiatrist with certification in addiction medicine. The website boasts a staff-to-client ratio of 1:2. The facility's treatment team includes nurses, licensed mental health therapists, social workers, and certified addiction counselors.
